What is the best modern commentary for the Gospel of Matthew (other than Scott Hahn’s Ignatius Study Bible)? If you list one, please describe its merits!

The Navarre Bible commentary on Matthew is quite good.
As you mention, Ignatius has a commentary on Matthew authored by Scott Hahn.
I would also heartily recommend “Fire of Mercy, Heart of the Word” by Erasmo Leiva-Merikakis. This is a two volume set published by Ignatius Press that covers Matthew 1-18 (I don’t know if a third volume is planned to complete the Gospel).
Finally, the new Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture is very promising. The volume on Matthew is not yet released, but it will be authored by Edward Sri and Curtis Mitch, both of whom I recommend highly.
