Hello,

I want to buy a copy of St Augustine’s “Confessions” but there are several translations available. Any advice on the “best” translation?

Thanks.

The problem I have with many of the translations of Confessions is that they are in older types of English. The only complete translation that I have found in “modern” english is the one by John Ryan. Here is a link to the book:Confessions of Saint Augustine

Before you run out and buy Confessions, I have the John Ryan translation I’ll loan you if you’re interested. I haven’t read it yet and don’t plan on reading it any time soon.

Heck, you can *have *my copy. Since I got that ECF book set, I don’t need my old paperback. It’s Ryan’s translation.

God bless.

Learn to read Latin, and read the Confessions in Latin. That’s the best way.

I don’t which translation is the best, but I love my F.J. Sheed translation. Seems to do a good job of being poetic without using archaic language.

I’ve just started reading the translation by John K. Ryan. I recommend it highly. I’ve started “Confessions” twice before with other translations over the years, but got bogged down with the language. Ryan’s translation makes “Confessions” very accessible.
