Best Da Vinci Code Response Material?

I’m posting in Apologetics instead of Popular Media, because this really is more of an apologetics issue. One of our Protestant relatives (we’re Catholic) has read the Da Vinci Code and is “researching” some of the supposed “facts” mentioned in the book, asking us about somethings that we’ve never heard before (probably because Dan Brown made them up :whacky: ). I looked online for books/pamphlets that answer some of the questions raised in the book and found three main ones. We would very much like to get one of these books for our relative, but which one to choose?

Has anyone here read one or more of these books?
  1. The Da Vinci Deception
  2. The Da Vinci Hoax
  3. De-Coding Da Vinci
Which would you suggest for our purpose? Thank you in advance!
 
In my observation, the two best critiques of Brown’s book for the general reader are these:

Darrell L. Bock, Breaking the Da Vinci Code: Answers to the Questions Everyone’s Asking (Nelson, 2004); ISBN 0-7852-6046-3

Carl E. Olson & Sandra Miesel, *The Da Vinci Hoax: Exposing the Errors in *The Da Vinci Code (Ignatius Press, 2004); ISBN 1-58617-034-1

If I could only recommend one, it would probably be the first. If you can get ahold of both, however, you’ll have all the material you’re likely to need. Hope this helps.

Our Parish is encouraging families to go to the movies the same day that the Da Vinci Code comes out, but go see another movie. Buying a ticket is like casting a vote. Vote for another movie . A family film called “Over the Hedge” comes out that day. A TON of us from church will be taking our kids to the movies.

at www.davincihoax.com there is a downloadable/printable pamphlet that you might find easily accessable and something to hand someone without having to spout out a ton of info.
 
Oh, thank you so much!! I know I really should get educated about this, especially before the movie comes out. Hopefully we can give these materials a read before we pass them on to our relatives. God bless!
 
For those who may be interested, in response to the DaVinci Code book and movie, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has also produced a TV special called Jesus Decoded scheduled to air on NBC on or about May 20. For more info, here.
 
Our DRE is putting together a study guide for all of the Parish’s Bible studies to go over together on how to rebut the “Code”. We wont get it till after Easter, but I will let you all know about it when we get it. Also, here is an e-mail I send to my Mom’s group about this very subject…

I agree with Don45, Bock’s Breaking (NT canon, including details on Gospel of Philip, Gospel of Mary Magdalene passages that Dan Brown uses, etc) and Olson/Miesel’s Hoax (history of Knights Templar, Priory of Sion, etc), are the most thorough books on the Bible, early Church history, medieval history, and Leonardo’s art. They get into all the details. However, you might give a short to the point response:

The Truth About The Da Vinci Code by Abanes
Cracking The Da Vinci Code booklet by Catholic Answers, soon to be republished with smaller size pages I think

For short books, these are the best. I have them all. 😃
