I received this Father’s Day letter last year from my daughter (a Dominican nun) - and as far as I know it is unsurpassed by any other Father’s Day card. So at the risk of sinning with pride, I will post it here and invite comments or other submissions for the coveted prize of “Best Father’s Day Card ever”.
Father’s Day 2010: I started thinking about the innumerable blessings God has poured out upon our family, upon you and me. How is it that I was blessed with a father who so wonderfully shows forth the love of my Father in heaven? How is it that I have always instinctively felt I intimately know you? That all of our thoughts though un-communicated seem to have been intimately shared? We are “of one mind and heart in God”.
How is it that God allowed, no that He determined from all eternity that two souls should have a bond so strong on earth and ever moving towards heaven? Father and daughter go hand in hand on a path, rough and narrow. The one same Love is our guide and Strength. The desire for Him is reflected in the light of our eyes, in the earnestness with which we seek the radiance of His face.
Our Hearts are united because they are pounding within us simultaneously with the same firmness of purpose, that is, to glorify the One true God. He is Light from Light. In Baptism He has made us children of light and ever kindles this fire within us through all His sacraments.
How is it that God spurs two souls to encourage each other on towards heaven so zealously? Have two souls ever found such joy in the conviction that both desire the sanctity of the other so steadfastly?
Dad, let’s not linger here where we are, but press on with rapid strides in love.
“Come Lord, stir us up and call us back. Be our Fire and our Sweetness. Let us Love. Let us run!” I will never tire of thinking of these words of St Augustine.
Let us fly to Mother Mary with our petitions in complete and total confidence. Let us stand beneath the Cross of the Crucified with her and be filled with joy at the thought of so much love!
This very Love has made Himself ours in the Eucharist. “It is no longer I who live in Christ, but Christ who lives in me and the life I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son, the Son of God, Who loved me and gave Himself for me.”
All my love in the Immaculate Heart - Your Daughter.
