Best Home School Religious Education Curricula

Hello All,

I am looking for a good Catholic religious education curriculum for grades pre-K through at least 8th grade for homeschooling. Does anyone have any experience along these lines? Can anyone recommend any curricula with some reasoning for what makes this or that curriculum better or worse?

I am in my first year as a Church School teacher and I found this series for my students because they didn’t know the basics which was upsetting to me. I believe the USCCB says this series is in conformity with Church which was important to me.

We used Faith and Life in the past and liked it. Textbook and workbook are separate but you don’t have to buy the workbook. There’s also a teacher’s manual, again it’s optional. They have a download site where you can download quizzes and lesson outlines. Great help to get started with lesson planning if you want to make your own. You can present a chapter a week. They will email you the password to those resources after you purchase the textbooks. One thing I like about the teachers’ manual is the chalk talk - basically drawings you can make/show your students to illustrate/explain the concept.

However, this year, I wanted to try something new. We are using Seton for Gr 1 and 6. (setonbooks.com) For older grades (we use Gr 6), activities are included at the end of each lesson. One thing I really like about Seton is that a concept is presented as a 4 days/week lesson instead of putting it all in one chapter. Enrolling in their hs program is optional. We like it so far…

I’ve also used pflaum gospel weeklies in my parish’s religious ed program. It focuses on the weekly gospel. They give you a weekly pamphlet and a catechism book. Teacher’s guide is available as a free download. (pflaum.com)

I am a big fan of the Religion for Young Catholic series from Seton (already mentioned). I am a graduate student in Theology and that is the series I used as a youngster which got me interested in the Faith. I know of no higher praise I could give than that.

There is also a website that talks about doing homeschool religious education, and does mention some of the other series available like the Didache series from Midwest Theological Forum in addition to the Ignatius Faith and Life series.

Another vote here for Faith and Life, I love the Teachers Manual though it costs a bit it is nice.

You do NOT have to buy Faith and Life from Ignatius. You can buy them from CHC (Catholic Heritage Curricula) which is a catholic homeschool curriculum vendor. chcweb.com/catalog/index.html
 
Thanks for all the great recommendations. I’m particularly pleased that there was nothing mentioned to outright avoid!

I’ll be taking a close look at both Faith and Life and the Young Catholic series.

I’ve got a third grader, but it seems I should start with the earlier coursework–correct me if I’m wrong. He’s brand new to all this.

This was my first year teaching Church School and I found a lot my kids, I have 3rd through 6th knew very little about the Catholic faith so I ordered them the 2nd grade book Jesus Our Life from the Faith and Life Series and they all seem be following it as if it were new material to them. I just ordered the teacher’s manual to make sure I am driving home the points correctly so when I recieve it I will post how it works.

Just another vote for Seton. I found it much more thorough and easy to use than Faith and Life, which itself is far better than anything else.
