Best HS program in homeschooling

HI everyone,

My dd is about to enter into 9th grade. I am looking at different programs with her. She loves the High School of your Dreams from CHC but I am unsure. I have to keep the transcripts and make my own diploma. Seton is not an option because we have done that and she hates it. I am looking at Kolbe Academy as well, but they seem to be like Seton.

Does anyone use CHC HS currently and how do you teens like it? I would like any (name removed by moderator)ut on just HS with CHC (Catholic Heritage Curricula).

My son loved the freedom of it.

It allowed him to chart his own course. He was able to say where he wanted to end up, and work back from there. He liked that it was all laid out for him.

He spent days pouring over the options. And then more time choosing his path.

Yes, you have to make your own transcript. But they give you a couple of ideas of how to do that. And your daughter can do most of the work, recording her hours and such.
 
Thanks so much. My daughter did not do well emotional with Seton and was so stressed out. I hope this program is not so strict. She does not have the organizational skills her son does or the determination, but she says it was Seton that made her that way. When we first tried homeschooling when she was in 3rd grade, I made the plan and she did it herself without my help. Over the years, she started to hate Religion and Seton. Her grades were great but they were just slipping a little by 7th grade in Seton. I did my own program for 8th grade, but is has not finished all four quarters, but I am letting it go. I think she will do well with CHC. She looked at it and looked it. It says it is for those students who do not like rigid programs. I read all that needed to be done in 9th grade Seton and it stressed me out. No wonder they are ready for College it is almost like college.

Where we live, we are required by law to have an umbrella school. BUT, our school only provided the umbrella, and didn’t do anything else.

My son also did not like a rigid program. We did Our Lady of the Rosary for 4th grade. It put both of us in tears. Awful doesn’t begin to describe it. He was doing book work for hours a day. And unless they have updated their books, the books are from the 40’s and 50’s. That is fine for Math, but not for History or Science. 🤷 Their religion program also required that he memorize stuff from the Catechism. NOT the Baltimore Catechism, the current one. Sorry, but that isn’t written for memorization. We were both glad to dump it.

We used CHC, after we tried OLOR, and we loved it. I worried that we would need more direction than their high school program could give us, but after reading through it and tweaking it a little, we loved it. 👍
 
We’ve been doing seton, this year we are sending all to a small Catholic school that seems like one that hasn’t been flipped to the social focus of today’s schools.

I’m guessing when High school hits we will be going back to seton.

I really like the structure, though some things could be done better.
 
Last year, two of my children applied for 4-year colleges. Definitely keep records and keep track of the books used for each “course” as well as keeping track of activities. Keep track of books on the subject which are not necessarily textbooks as well.

For example, if you were to vacation near DC and visit some historic site: field trip. If y’all put up a shed: shop project. Keep track of all this stuff as it happens, even if it’s just causally in a spiral notebook. Better yet have your student do it for you! A sort of running diary.

I wrote on the transcripts that the courses did not necessarily align time-wise.
 
Oh, and the other thing: find out what the top state school in your state requires, make a chart of it, and make sure you cover all those subjects one way or another.

Sometimes the colleges have extra requirments from the high school–now is the time to find that out.
 
Thank you to all of you. I appreciate your feedback and yes, it all helped me. I think I will stay then with CHC and not do the umbrella school. I will check for what is required courses for University here in Florida.
