Why is a BESTMAN necessary in a Catholic sacramental wedding?
Is it just tradition or is it Catholic tradition?
Is it a must or an option?

Really appreciate answers that reflect the mind of the Church.

Thanks and God Bless!

Two witnesses are necessary by both state law and Canon Law 1108. The canon does not mention the sex of the witnesses only that there must be two. It is common practice for the bride to choose a witness (maid or matron of honor) and the man to choose a witness (Best man). This is by custom. The answer to your question is that it is not necessary for a best man as it could be two women witnesses.

You might get more and better answers in liturgy. Contact a moderator and ask to have it moved there.

Welcome to the forums and congratulations on the up coming wedding.🙂
