Best missal to use for the EF Mass

No, that’s not true. I had the same confusion when I was looking for a non-daily (i.e. Sunday only) missal. I will try to explain: this missal has the readings for all Sundays. The EF on Sunday could be a low or a high mass. The parish that I attend Latin Mass at only has the high mass twice a month. The other Sundays are low masses. It’s the same readings whether it’s a high or low mass. This missal doesn’t have the asperges rite which I believe happens before each high mass.

What makes the mass high or low is the number of priests/deacons/subdeacons and the presence or absence of a choir. This missal also has the major feast days, Holy Week, the nuptial mass, funeral mass, etc so you can use it on those days as well.

Although it’s a Sunday missal, I have used it at low mass during the week and it’s still useful to me although it doesn’t contain the readings. It’s kinda like those red paper missals the church provides that don’t contain the readings but the ordinary of the Mass.

I’m new to the EF so hopefully I explained that ok. 👍

Not exactly, as there are some variances within the High Mass due to the presence of the deacon, etc. These differences are very slight and likely would not present a “where am I!?” moment for anyone following the Missal. I have not devoted enough study to the liturgy at this level to fully describe it and am relaying this from merely my own reading of the Canon.

Since you’re new to the EF, I thought you might like to know the distinctions here:

Missa Privata (“Private Mass”) - discontinued before 1962

*Missa Lecta *- (“Read Mass”) - (also called Low Mass, for reasons unknown to me)

*Missa Cantata *- (“Sung Mass”) - (also called High Mass, I believe, before 1962)

*Missa Solemnis *- ("Solemn Mass) - (also called Solemn High Mass, with deacon and subdeacon, MC, Thurifer, Acolytes)
 
I would be very open to updating the Saints to include those like St. Padre Pio, St. Maximilian Kolbe, etc. Anything beyond that, Fr. Z is on point-- hands off.

Any further change to the TLM would be nothing short of a Nazi eugenics program.

Aren’t we out of the way enough already by being foisted into the ghetto? Must Mengele really experiment.

Leave us alone with our davening in strange tongues. We’re marginalized and need not be killed or bred out of existence.

The original publisher certainly assumed that Low Masses were the norm for his audience, but except for lacking the Aperges Me prayer at the beginning, there is no difference, you know.

The publisher certainly assumed his average Catholic mostly needed to prepare for Low Mass, but the only textual difference between Low Mass and Solemn Mass is the Aperges prayer before Mass and the incensing prayer in the middle of Mass. I never miss them.

If you can’t find another small missal that includes the asperges, just print the prayer on cardstock and tuck it in your missal before the ordinary. Problem solved.
 
Another mid-sized, full use(daily and Sundays) is the New Marian Missal. I like Fr Lasance, but like someone else said, it and the full size St Andrews are as bulky as the Baronious.

I attend both the OF and the EF, depending on the day/which Mass I am able to make it to. For the EF, I attend a diocesan TLM, the only one offered in my city on an occasional basis. I’m grateful to go when we have it, it’s very beautiful. I also love the community and the Mass at the OF where I attend most often with family. Most people who attend the EF in my city seem to use the 1962 Missal from Angelus Press, although I have seen a few with the Baronius. 🙂

I haven’t looked through the Baronius, but I love the Angelus. There is so much information, and it’s laid out so beautifully. I love reading through the Proper of the Saints. Yesterday was St. Teresa of the Child Jesus, today is St Francis of Assisi. 🙂 This Missal’s helped me a lot in my faith, that’s for sure.

A few feasts will be off, like the feast of the Precious Blood.

In the Canon, it won’t read “and blessed Joseph, her spouse”

And there will be a third Confiteor between the Angus Dei and the people’s “Domine non sum dignum” that was omitted in 1962.

In other words, not much. I just penciled in the new mention of Joseph myself.
 
I have the 1945 Father Lasance missal and absoluetely love it. Its lite but as far as the 62 missals having the Baronius Press edition, I highly recommend it. I dont recommend the Angelus Press at this time due to its affliation with the SSPX

Since the Angelus Press Missal is just a reprint of the 1962 Latin Mass Missal and doesn’t have any modern commentary in it that discusses the SSPX or anything else, I’m not sure I see the problem. 🙂 Unless the problem for you isn’t the content of the Missal, but in giving money to its publishers - and if that’s the case, then by all means, vote with your wallet.

My problem isnt with its content is that is affiliated with the SSPX as money is distributed to them as it is the missal is run by them. No offense to the SSPX, I just dont want to endorse them in any way til they are full communion with Rome. Angelus Press is owned by the SSPX. I pray for them because I want them to be 100% with Rome because they are legit and the E.F. deserves to be heard

Ah, ok. 🙂 Agreed, the EF certainly deserves to be heard. For the record, I have no feelings one way or another for Angelus Press or for Baronius. I’ve just known them to be sellers of traditional Catholic material and got the Angelus missal last year on the advice of a friend. 🙂 I find the TLM just heavenly and was simply happy to have a missal.
