Best Movies about Saints (And Other Religious Movies)

Hello everyone, when you look at the lives of the Saints, you can go, “wow, that sounds like it could be a movie except it actually happened”. So let’s talk about your favorite Saints Movie (along with other religious movies).

I really liked “Becket” with Peter O’toole and Richard Burton. Great cinematic portrayal of St. Thomas Becket. I also liked “A Man for All Seasons” with Paul Schofield, but I haven’t finished watching it yet (I checked it out from the library but alas, the disc froze in the middle) I also remembered watching the CBS miniseries on Pope John Paul II when I was in elementary school, and I liked that one (I don’t remember much). Witness to Hope was another great movie about Saint JP2.
 
Two good films I can remember are Don Bosco (1988) and Romero (1989). I’m sure there are other films about these saints, but these are the films I saw about them. Don Bosco was in Italian. The version I watched had English subtitles. Don Bosco found a way to get young boys and men productive. This is something we really need these days. So many boys and young men not sure what to do with their lives. Romero was in English. I remember seeing it in school. It was about the Archbishop Oscar Romero who worked to help the poor during the Salvadoran Civil War. As is the case in most conflicts, the poor were the most disrupted and needed the most help.
 
The Reluctant Saint is one of my favourites… just for the humour. A lovely story of a great Saint.
 
I very much like many of the saint movies available at Ignatius Press.

Some of my favorites are “Clare and Francis”, “Maria Goretti”, “Bernadette” and many more.
 
My favorite is “A Man For All Seasons.” Another great one is “The Song of Bernadette.”
 
You can’t beat “Song of Bernadette” for a classic movie about a Saint and our Blessed Mother. That’s an amazing movie!

There’s another movie called “God’s Mighty Servant” about Pope Pius XII’s (Cardinal Pacelli) housekeeper that’s very good. That movie is a ‘twofer’ that can be watched with “Under the Roman Sky” about Pius XII’s pontificate during WWII. I watched “Under the Roman Sky” first, then “God’s Mighty Servant” on a wonderfully cold, rainy winter Sunday. Both are available from Netflix on DVD.

Ignatius Press has some very good ones on several Carmelites.

Teresa of Jesus is a multipart series in Spanish with English subtitles (it is not too hard to follow anyway) that is very historically accurate in terms of wardrobe, scenery as well as to her actual life and writings.

Teresa of the Andes is similar-- (Spanish with English subtitles) also quite authentically rendered.

Edith Stein- The Seventh Chamber has Maia Morgenstern (who played Mary in The Passion of the Christ) portraying the famous Carmelite philosopher and martyr of Auschwitz.

They also sell Leonardo Defillipis works such as John of the Cross and Therese.

I love Maria Goretti and The Song of Bernadette! I also love Therese, St. Francis of Assisi, The 13th Day, and Mary of Nazareth. I have several more; I love to watch religious movies while I make rosaries.

The others you mentioned I have as well. I like to invite about five ladies over for a pot luck lunch. We then watch the movie, and have some prayer time afterwards.

We do that about once a month.
 
A Time for Miracles with Elizabeth Ann Seton is fantastic!! Kate Mulgrew did a wonderful job. There is also a movie about Damien of Molokai that is good, too.

I would like to see a movie about Our Lady of Fatima. The subject interests me.

Personally, I don’t think the movie did justice to the Saint, but it’s a good start on being introduced to her. 🙂
