Best New Jerusalem Bible

I was talking with a professor I’m going to be having next term for a class on Luke and Acts, and he told me that I will need to have a copy of the New Revised Standard Version, the New American Bible, and the New Jerusalem Bible, in addition to several textbooks for the class. I have a copy of the New Oxford Annotated Bible with Apocrypha: New Revised Standard Version I picked up a few years ago for a different class which I really like (ISBN: 978-0195289602), and I have a copy of the New American Bible (With the Revised Book of Psalms and the Revised New Testament) (ISBN: 978-0529064844), but I do not have a copy of the New Jerusalem Bible. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good New Jerusalem Bible edition? Preferably an annotated study edition as it will be used for years to come as a study aid.

The New Jerusalem Bible comes in two flavours:

1. The Reader’s Edition. This has the full text, short footnotes and a few cross-references, plus a mini-dictionary of important concepts. This is probably the best one for devotional reading, but it’s of little use as a study aid. (It has a picture of Raphael’s Madonna and Child on the cover.)
2. The full version. This has all the explanatory notes and essays you’ll need, but they’re in rather small type. This is the one I’d recommend. It has a picture of the Transfiguration on the cover.

I’d agree with #2, based on what you described as your needs. If you’re willing to forego all the study notes, there is a Saints Devotional Edition that has a lot of nice excerpts from the saints/doctors of the church commenting on topics in scripture. There is also a study edition, but I’ve not seen it so can’t comment more on it.

Maybe you do not need to spend too much on multiple Bibles. I myself love the Jerusalem bible and stick with it for serious meditation and prayer.

The source of the hard copy depends on your native language - if you are American or from one of the other English speaking communities you will want your copy to conform to your preferred language.
