Best Places to Get Straight-Up News?

I imagine there will be responses all over the place, but I’m going to try nonetheless. 😛

I quit paying close attention to the news several years ago. It was too depressing, people yelled all the time, and it all seemed super infected with bias. Maybe that is still the case. But I feel like I don’t know much about what is going on, and I would like to see if - maybe there is the slightest chance of this - I can find some reliable, honest news sources to follow. I generally know where to find that for local coverage, which is helpful. I’m looking for US and international - print, online, TV, whatever you find and trust. I’m looking for news, too, not opinion and editorializing.

So is there such coverage out there, or am I chasing a pipe dream? 😛
 
If you find such a place, let me know. I don’t think there is a “neutral” un-biased news source anywhere.
 
No one is perfect, of course, but Reuters really prides themselves on objectivity. I switched to using it as my primary news source 6 months ago and I never looked back.
 
The Canadian news reports health news, environmental problems and issues a year ahead of the United States news:

BBC News is all right but it is very liberal on all the social issues, bashes the Catholic Church and supports worldwide Sodomite Emancipation.

U.S. News tends to focus on the weather, celebrities, and a story about animals at the end of the broadcast.

I also like PBS’s News Hour though it’s the same on all the social issues / Catholic Church/ Sodomites as the BBC.

It gives more in-depth coverage on the political issues but its reporting on the social issues is one-sided from the liberal point of view:

I don’t think that means what you think it means.
 
All news reporting is biased/unfair/etc. in one way or another.

I need to keep that in mind when looking at sites like yahoo news, etc.

That being said, for news, I start with a Catholic angle on the news.
catholicpulse.com It is a website owned by the Knights of Columbus.

The mainstream media just does not “get” i.e. understand religion. I check the “Get Religion” site weekly: patheos.com/blogs/getreligion They point out some really bad reporting on the God-beat.

I have read some of the sites mentioned here. Also, don’t forget the Christian Science Monitor

CatholicPulse prominently displays its commentary and opinion articles at the top and side of their website. However, if you scroll down, you will find links to news articles from a wide variety of sources. The articles are selected because they cover topics of interest to Catholics, not because those articles are written from a Catholic point of view.

I agree Catholic Pulse is worth checking out. If you are interested in international news, the New York Times is hard to beat. I know its domestic reporting is often regarded as slanted to the left. However, I think its international news really shines.
 
It’s probably best to get your news from a variety of sources. Part of the reason is because the national broadcast news doesn’t want to cover anything controversial, so as to not lose viewers (they’ve already lost too many viewers to cable news, anyway) or corporate sponsors. Cable news has a plethora of talking heads which cater to their own audience - and will slant the news with a serious bias toward their viewership (obviously Fox News is slanted heavily to the right and MSNBC is slanted heavily to the left; CNN is about center-left). PBS Newshour is more in-depth than general national broadcast news, but still has too much commentary. Events in the Middle East are probably best covered by al Jazeera, based in Qatar, but again, it lends its own bias (it was al Jazeera that was first trumpeting the “Arab Spring”). And pro-life websites will of course focus on the culture wars from a pro-life point of view.

See, the thing is, everyone has biases. Many news reporters try very hard to not let their biases show, but it’s not always possible - and commentators are pushing opinions, not news. The thing is, when one person’s worldview matches the worldview of the news that he/she is reading/watching/listening to, the person believes that the report is unbiased. If the same person’s worldview does not match the worldview of the news that he/she is reading/watching/listening to, the person believes that the report is “too liberal”/“too conservative”. I’m serious. The reason why Fox News has the highest viewership of any news is because it matches the worldview of its viewership - staunch conservatives - who believe that anything that doesn’t match their worldview is “too liberal”. MSNBC tries to do the same with staunch liberals, but staunch liberals have many more outlets to receive their news - and often think of MSNBC as itself being “too conservative”. Seriously. There are people who believe that the most unbiased news is actually “The Daily Show” with Jon Stewart - which isn’t even really a newscast - it’s a satire!

As such, my advice is to gleam as many different perspectives as you can - and always make sure you get the Catholic perspective from different Catholic news services.

You Americans and your first amendment . Always the first to shout from the roof tops but will spin right around when someone edits your shot in the news to make you look like a goof.

News should state the facts and let the public form their own opinions .

You want commentary wait for that Segment sepret from the reporting bit.

Now, if the British want to create a news organization with the task of reporting the news as accurately as possible, that is their business. What is it to you and the First Amendment?

U recognize the press was specifically by name singles out for protection by our founding fathers? The lack of a USA in media meaning government involvement is what makes us beautiful. I read news press.com. am an editor there and journalist 36 years.
