I think we agree there is such a thing as objective truth. I think we also agree that, as human beings, we can never fully capture it. I disagree that everyone has an agenda which they promote in their news coverage. We can, to greater or lesser degrees, attempt to capture objective truth. **The best news outlets make an effort to come as close as possible. They will refine, and refine again, their news reporting to be as objective as possible. **

Some news outlets aren’t interested in being objective, and they deliberately advance an agenda. I think that is the wrong approach.
Yes, thank you - this is what I am looking for.

I am willing to read/follow multiple sources, but I don’t want to have to sift through tons of…well, you know ;)…to get to anything remotely worth knowing about. IMO that’s a waste of time, and I’m not looking to be a news junkie. Just be a well-informed citizen. So I’d like to pick two or three, that are generally reliable, to help me get a good picture, if that makes sense.

One thing that I hate, and it was brought up in this thread, is the hours and hours of “commentary” on the news, that are really just reiterations of political talking points. I’d love commentary if it was actually, “Well, here’s what this party proposed to deal with this problem. Here’s what the problem looks like, and here are some possible outcomes of this policy.” Instead, I usually hear, “Well, this proposal polls well in this subgroup, but it might lose the vote of this group.” I don’t give a crud about polling. I want to know whose policies are actually likely to work, and I know there is expert knowledge on those subjects that might help me make better decisions as a voter. But maybe actually breaking that down would give too much appearance of bias, but at least that’s honest bias (truly thinking the solution proposed by a group is going to work over the other group’s solution), instead of manipulative coverage.

So I’m not overall opposed to commentary and opinion, just as it currently exists in most US media. 😛

Why don’t we drop the nationalistic chest-thumping and the jingoistic aspersions thrown at other countries? I don’t think either of those things are related to this thread.
Which is why I got annoyed ‘that’s unconstitutional’ well… we aren’t in Kansas Dorthy tbh.😃

Comments like that just are so… not everyone needs the American eagle brand of freedom and the kicker here is the people of our nations don’t want it.

Which again should be enough since freedom means you have the right to choose how you live and conduct business.

Then some loud mouth American comes along and tells you how insulted they are that you aren’t as ‘free’ as them.

So understand my chest thumping comes from a position of weariness as I’m next door to Americans and I have to put up with this **** all the time. lest my Aussie, British, African and Indian counterparts have a oceans distance between them and America.

And they have freedom just fine.

All hail the commonwealth!

Reason i said its unconstitutional bcause what u wefe advocating was for us to break tbe law. Its our law whether u like it or not.

Your law, not ours

This may serve as a good starting point.

It can be interesting to spend some time reading newspapers from another country/continent to get a sense of how others see world issues.

When an international issue catches my attention, I might check on The Guardian as well as a few other papers.

It can be helpful to read papers looking for bias and then use that bias recognition as a screening tool while reading the articles. Bias should be expected.

netpapers.com gives you non-English options as well.

May God bless you.
