Pax Domini,

I have read many spiritual direction books, but this one I have found the best daily manual to guide me, “The Divine Intimacy” by Fr. Gabriel of St. Mary Magdalene. It is full of Carmelite spirituality.

Has anyone been benefited by this book? It is a favorite of Johnnette Benkovic, on EWTN’s Women of Grace. It follows the old 1962 liturgical calendar, but it is very good. I love it’s teachings on union with God, humiliations, detachment, chastity, and everything else. If you don’t have a spiritual director, you need this book.

Also, I was very benefited by Dr. Ralph Martin’s book, “The Fulfillment of All Desire.” It helped me understand the stages of the spiritual life. This is a must read too.

Some would say it is very good because it does follow the 1962 liturgical calendar. 🙂

But yes absolutely. Dan Burke of Divine Intimacy Radio (also very good) has said if you read this throughout the year you can have no better spiritual direction.

Here is a Divine Intimacy calendar to make it easier to follow the daily readings. You can also insert it into google calendar…

Ralph Martin’s book is excellent.

Divine Intimacy is a truly amazing resource. All the major points of the interior life are touched on in the course of a year. It has been a real blessing for me.

Thank you for recommending this. I haven’t heard of it, and it’s always nice to add to my spiritual reading booklist. 👍

Dear Michael,

You are quite right, it is a superb book.

Baronius Press publishes a very good version of it. 👍

Hi. While I don’t doubt the legitimacy of the claim that there might be good spiritual direction on offer, the source given for support, however, makes me doubt it.

Do you mind elaborating? I don’t know much about this book or the publisher. 🙂

Hi. With all due respect, normally I would share my reasons. But it was a long time ago when I lost confidence with the person whom the poster sourced as a decent critic of Divine Intimacy.

As to Divine Intimacy itself being good or not, I think when looking for decent spiritual direction, one ought to do proper thorough research, and look to a wide range of critics, before continuing along a certain path.

No worries. I’ve been interested in books like this for some time but figuring out what’s good or not can be daunting. Thanks.

Just get the book and make your own decision. It is pricey…

but you might be able to find it in a library and I have also seen them in Adoration chapels to be able to check it out before purchasing. Dan Burke’s Divine Intimacy shows are available here…

I treated myself to that book, and I am not sorry I did. It came highly recommended. There are many excellent spiritual books; I am sure there are some that will appeal to different personalities.

I’ve been reading DI for a long time and have read TFOAD. Both are excellent.
