If you could buy only one film about St. Bernadette of Lourdes, which one would you pick?

I’m looking for a film to show our family that would keep the interests of kids aged 8-14? I’ve seen most of the available videos and the new Navis films release.

I like “The Song of Bernadette” that was made back in the 1940’s and that starred Jennifer Jones. I think that it is a lovely film and a nice rendition of the story of St. Bernadette.

I’m looking for a film to show our family that would keep the interests of kids aged 8-14? I’ve seen most of the available videos and the new Navis films release.

I showed this film to two of my grandsons, young teens, and they were fascinated and inspired by it.

The director, Jean Dellannoy, followed the documents on Bernadette and created a movie that was more in form with her personality, and events surrounding the apparition. There even is a sequel that shows when she entered the convent and what her life was like there; it is called The Passion of Bernadette.

I have also shown the film to adults at my home, and they very much enjoyed it.

I heard of somebody who was in another room when this version started playing on TV, and he was so intrigued by the music from the film score that he went to take a look . . . watched the whole thing and ended up converting to Catholicism.

A lot of young people don’t like black and white movies, but I’m 18 and “The Song of Bernadette” is a GOOD movie. I’m usually not too big on movies as far as being entertained and paying attention, but I did with that movie and seems to be what I’ve read about St. Bernadette, historically accurate.

I recently watched The Song of Bernadette with my ten year old daughter. She liked it so much she was talking about it at school and dressed up like St. Bernadette for the wax museum they did at her school.

I first saw “The Song of Bernadette” on TV when I was a girl. That film made a huge impact on me mostly because of the holiness I sensed from it, the wonderful acting (although I was hardly aware of that aspect at the time), and the magnificent, hauntingly beautiful score. Jennifer Jones was chosen for the part because of all the actresses that tried out, she was the only one who “saw” instead of “looked” when she had to act out seeing the Lady in the niche. And Linda Darnell, who got no screen credit, was resplendent in the role of the Lady. Everyone on screen was just fantastic. You get so caught up in the story you forget its in B&W. Anyway, I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Thanks everyone. I like all the movies. I just watched the Song of Bernadette and the newer film over the weekend. They’re both great. For my kids, especially the 10 & 13 year old, they would relate better to the newer Delannoy film. Thanks for all your comments.
