I would recommend the Washington DC area. True, the cost of living is pretty high here (although you can live a bit out and it’s more reasonable), but the job market is one of the best in the country, and we are not that far from some beautiful areas of the country. It has a large number of Eastern Catholic parishes: Melkite, Ruthenian, Maronite, Ethiopian, etc.

The DC area is also home to Holy Transfiguration Melkite Church in Northern Virginia, which in my opinion is one of the best and most authentically “Eastern” parishes in the country!
DC also has thee only Maronite seminary in the States. Yes except for the cost of living DC would be a great place to live.

I’ve only been aquainted with it for about 5 years, but the pastor has been there for over 25 years, so I imagine it is much like it has always been.

Perhaps we just have a different view of what makes a “best” parish. 🙂
I just had a look-up and it seems that yes, the pastor is the same. Which means either (a) it has changed in 30+ years, or (b) the presence of assistant/associate priests has made a big difference, or (c) it hasn’t changed at all. Whichever way, it is also distinctly possible, as you say, that we have a different view of such things. 🙂

I’m getting ideas for the distant future… 🙂
  1. What is the Best (U.S.) State to move to that has abundant Eastern Catholic churchs. And hopefully of varied nationalities and rites. I know some states like Ohio that are rich with Bzantine Catholics, but hoping to find one that has other Churches too, like Maronites, Melkites, Chaldeans etc. (especially interested in Maronites and Chaldeans).
  2. Cost of living is reasonable (compared to California)
  3. other miscellaneous benefits like natural beauty, good job market etc.
Your best bet is So. Cal. There are dozens of EC Parishes of all varities, including Maronite, Chaldean, Melkite, etc. It is also one of the most beautiful areas in the country with sea shore, mountains and everything inbetween. I have actually body surfed in the morning and taken a sleigh ride in the afternoon of the same day.

I lived more then half my life in Southern California, High Desert. Yes the urban areas would be good for EC, but not so much where I grew up (Ridgecrest, California). The cost of living in my hometown is good. I would love to move back, my Northern Pennsylvanian wife ain’t to keen on desert living though…
