Best Theology Graduate/PhD Programs

I not sure where to post this, but:

I am considering going to graduate school to get my masters, then a doctorate, in Theology. Does anyone know of or have attended any programs? I am looking for the best both in academic rigor and prestige and faithfullness to the magisterium.

I’m in the US, but I’d definitely look at schools in other countries.

I am in my second semester of this program:
ipt.avemaria.edu/index.htm
and I can recommend it without reservation. Ave Maria University is in Naples, FL but the IPT offers the MTS program at a growing number of satelllite campuses. My classes meet in Green Bay, WI.

I know Martin Luther King got his PhD in theology from Boston University. He wasn’t Catholic, though, so I don’t know if that’s quite what you’re looking for. God bless you wherever you go!
 
I read that Franciscan University has a program that can be completed partially through correspndence. I am starting to look into that.
 
I’ve heard great things about Ave Maria, and I’m interested to hear another good opinion of it.

I actually just graduated (undergrad) from BU, though not from the theology dept. Martin Luther King did get a degree from there. They have his thesis displayed in the lobby of the library. It’s in this dinky little case though, which is kind of sad. If I smashed the glass I bet I could just grab it and walk out. However, from what I understand, they are non-demonitional with a leaning toward world-religions. Also, they seem to be teaching from a moral relativistic point of view. Thank you for the blessing, though, and likewise.

I’ve heard good things about Franciscan University, too. (Mmmm, buckeyes). Does anyone know what the differences between Ave Maria and the former are?

How about international schools?

A lot depends on what aspect of theology you wish to study. Historical Theology? Systematic Theology? Scripture?

What might be a good choice for one, might not be a good choice for another.

I just went there a month ago and they had a very impressive Theology program and Pre-Theologate program even though they just started. They are in a Temporary Campus(400 something students) right now but move to the permanent campus(Up to around 5,000 I think) in 2007

Systematic theology is the study of theology/doctrine in an orderly (systematic) fashion, rather than, say, from an historical perspective.

Examples of Catholic systematic theology would include:

“Sentences” by Peter Lombard
“Summa Theologiae” by St. Thomas Aquinas

Examples of Protestant systematic theology would include:

“Institutes of the Christian Religion” by John Calvin
“Church Dogmatics” by Karl Barth

You recieve a Masters in Theology in Seminary. Im looking into Villanova, Catholic university, DeSales University and Franciscan University of Steubenville…all great programs…

Thanks for explaining systematic vs. historical theology. I hadn’t heard that distinction before. What would an example of historical theology be?
