I still like the wording of the KJV. I know its sources are out of date. That’s what my great grandma read to me and those are still the passages I hear in my ears that sound the most normal and “holy”. But that’s my own imprinting…

I know this version is not Catholic but I like the NIV. Although recently I am looking for a Bible with more commentary as I want to go deeper with my studies. I need to look at the different Catholic Bibles that you mentioned and see which one I would prefer. I agree with everyone else though that no matter the version if you read that is the most important thing. 👍

The official version used in Mass is the NAB, but I really like, and use, the Douay-Rhiems
Only in the US. In much of the rest of the English speaking world, it is the Jerusalem Bible. It is the latest and most accurate translation by Catholic scholars, there is no Protestant version. First translated into French, the English version was translated from the original Greek and Hebrew in 60s.

The footnotes and book introductions are excellent and comprehensive - its exegetical explanation would be sufficient for most everyday use purposes. The language is just a little more scholarly than RSV but still poetic enough for a good mass reading but the spelling is British.

There is an updated translation in 80s (New Jerusalem Bible) but it is not used for liturgy.

I use the NAB, principally because of the footnotes and cross-references it has, which is missing in versions of the NRSV and RSV. It makes, for me anyway, studying the bible a little easier, and brings to light lots of little details I might otherwise miss.

YAY 👍 Finally someone besides me who likes the NAB!
