A requested handwritten icon is almost completed. It will be a gift to a couple getting married soon. Is there a best time or way to give this to the couple? I don’t imagine it being stuffed into a tissue lined pretty deco bag with handles.
That wouldn’t be practical - the egg tempera and oils would rub off 😉
Just wondering … any thoughts?

IKON - MARRIAGE

I am not sure if this ikon is to be the crowning ikon for blessing of husband or of wife - usually crowning icons (венчальные иконы) are a pair for marriage blessing, one for wife of Mother of God, and one for husband, of Our Lord Christ. If this is for their marriage - let them know and have ikon (s) at church before ceremony. Many buy their own, their own candles and rings - or may have some in their family from old generations.

In any case usually do not cover ikon except with kiot - to give to husband and wife.

Are they Eastern Catholic or Orthodox? If so, buy a nice rushnyk and wrap that around the ikon and present to them that way… at least that’s what I’m doing with an ikon I’m painting as a wedding present…

Hope this helps…

Thanks for the advice. I like the idea of a rushnyk. Perhaps I could embroider this myself. What is a kiot?
The icon is Our Lady of Tenderness
I wish that I could share a photo when it is finished but I am not allowed to without permission. My husband and I requested that the artist blend both eastern and western technique. This is a first for her. She said that it is quite nice. I can hardly wait till Christmas when I am allowed to view.

I will inquire about it being present during the nuptial Mass…
No one can imagine how happy I am to give this to my daughter and her future husband as a wedding gift. Is there a more perfect wedding gift? No

A kiot is a type of case used to hold an ikon. It usually has a glass to protect the ikon and has a korbel (ikon lamp) attached to the bottom.
(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

Some examples of kiots…

Hope this helps…

Here is a link to a seller on eBay who has rushynky patterns. They are written in Ukrainian, but they do have a DMC color number for the threads…

cgi.ebay.com/UKRAINIAN-TOWEL-CROSS-STITCH-PATTERN-RUSHNYK-4505_W0QQitemZ280223382767QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116

You can go to their store and find a pattern that you like and it usually takes about 10 days for it to get here…

Hope this helps…

I see.
We have a 6 foot curio cabinet for the couple. I’ve told them that the top shelf is reserved exclusively for something very special. They have no idea what it is. 😃 I’m not sure which I can hardly wait for - the wedding day or to give them the icon.
With the hope of a houseful of children someday I thought a cabinet would be better protection for the icon.

Thanks for the tip. I’ll need to shop around.

IKON CORNER or CABINET

Curio Cabinet?

Ikon is not antiquarian thing (curio?) and should be placed not in a cabinet but giving most prominent (beautiful) corner of couple’s bedroom. Like Pachunky believe best is in corner freely in a kiot with a border of rushnyk, small lampka in front.

curio cabinets are a type of cabnitry used more for things of precious value; they are protective display cases.

Yes, a rushnyk is very appropriate to adorn the icon and if hand-embroidered is itself a wonderful and very meaningful (and traditional) wedding gift (this is how it is usually given in the Ukrainian tradition).

There is a plan.
The couple will be invited to a special blessing of the artist’s icons before Mass and then presented with their gift from parents. This all on a Mary feast day.
