My wife converetd to our Faith 4 years ago(she was Anglican). The other night, at a CPC banquet beleive it or not, a fellow catholic invited her to go to a weekly Scripture Study at a local Baptist Church. She told her it was led by a minister with a Maters in Scripture and they used Beth Moores study guides. She told the lady she would get back woith her.

Afterwards she asked me what I thought and i told her that IMO she had no business going to a Proestatnt Scripture study ecspcially not one based on Beth Moore Stuides.

I had a frined who did this once and she quit in disgust when they got to Galatians.

Was I off base telling her it was a BAD idea?

Hi,
I have done 3 Beth Moore studies and she has never once said anything bad about any other denomination. I am doing her Daniel study now and she said in the second video that when we study end times theology that there are many different interpretations. She said it is ok to believe what you want but it is also ok to study it out. She never claims one denom over another.

I think you jumped the gun a little. Give Beth Moore a chance. We have several ladies who come to bible studies at our church and they still attend their catholic church. IMHO I think your making a bigger deal out of this then you should.

What was it about Galations that offended your friend? Just curious.

Thanks for the info. I beleive it was the emphasis on saved by Faith alone in Galatians that ran her off

Hi,

Oh, I dont know Galations well except the fruit of the spirit. I hope I dont offend you with my response I just love Beth Moore. I think she really does a good job at teaching in a interfaith kinda way. She also doesnt command that you believe in what she says.
Let me know what you guys decide.

God Speed

I don’t know how grounded in her Catholic Faith your wife is, but in general, I’d say you did the right thing. Just like a Baptist wouldn’t encourage a new member of their church to attend a Catholic or Orthodox Bible study, ungrounded or weak Catholics should avoid non-Catholic studies. Not that these studies or the people that sponsor them are evil, but pouring the wine of error into a new wineskin can ruin the wineskin. The Galatians example is a case in point.

Just because other Catholics may attend these things doesn’t make it right, either. So many Catholics these days are so ungrounded and ignorant of their own Catholic Faith, they wouldn’t recognize error if it stomped on their foot.

That may be so true. Sometimes Catholics don’t know their faith enough to know when something that opposes their faith is being taught. I have also seen where the one teaching it is not aware they are teaching in opposition to the Church because it is not explicit.

She does not know Scripture very well. I am not comfortable with her getting her first in depth exposure to Scriputre from a protestant perspective. I offered to get a Catholic scripture study guide and do a study on our own-I think that is the route we will take.

Ill give an example of where I think Beth Moore falls short for a Catholics. My Friend who took her course said there was a section on the tabernacle and how Beth Moore gave a great insight on it HOWEVER never made the connection between the concept of the perfect Tabernacle and Marys perpetual Virginity. When she bought this up she was not well received.

I heard Beth Moore is a Seventh Day Adventist. If that’s the case, that will skew her opinions on the various symbolisms and typologies that come up.

My Catholic parish offers several Bible studies. We have an adult Sunday school (Little Rock Scripture Study), a weekday morning Bible study class based on the next week’s Sunday readings, and an evening Bible study held in the homes of the members (who are not all Catholic–it is an ecumenical Bible study). I don’t know that much about Beth Moore, but I do have friends from church who volunteered for the last Billy Graham crusade and who participated in the women’s meeting by his daughter,
Anne Graham Lotz. I don’t do an ecumenical Bible study, but I do volunteer at an ecumenical mission meal for the poor and am a good friend of a Methodist minister. He has never tried to “convert” me; in fact, his wife is a practicing Catholic and he has never tried to convert her! I will probably do more research into Beth Moore, because I don’t know if she has ever taught anything that was actually anti-Catholic. If not, as long as you are grounded in the Catholic faith, I do not see where there would be a problem. However, if she professed openly anti-Catholic beliefs, I would not attend classes that used her study materials.

I may be thinking of a Dorothy Moore, or a different person. They are a couple, I think the guy’s name is Ray. I’m not sure, but, their stuff is full of all sorts of prejudices based on their SDA beliefs.

I understand that people disagree with certain theology. But, many people assume things in a prejudicial way. They make generalizations and assumptions based on their views be it conservative, progressive or whatever, and don’t bother to analyze the other side.

The problem with ecumenical Bible studies is that whoever is leading it is whose theology you’re going to get. If that theology is flawed, then the entire exercise is a waste of time, and may even be harmful. I would stick to a study written by someone you know is sound in their doctrine. Good luck.

I do know that she is Southern Baptist. Maybe I’m a little whacked, as i was reading your post and you seem to think it is not good to fellowship other denominations.

I grew up in a church United Pentecostal and we was taught they were the only ones going to Heaven…Can you believe this. As I began walking into other areas I found so many folks , other denominations thought they was the only ones going to Heaven.

I have learned many things from other churches and I feel that as the body of Christ that there is One Church with many members.

The first church I remember getting great teachings from was a Southern Baptist Church. We lived in the old section of Mobile, Al and was many Catholic churches and I even attened mass with my friend and have great respect . Growing up I may have even been Catholic for we always had to eat fish on Fridays which to this day I still observe.

Searching family history i learned that ancestors were Anglican. I have been in Methodist churches and the list goes one.

I guess my one true desire is to see everyone come together and worship in Spirit and in Truth. Back to Beth, I’ll try her spirit maybe another few weeks, I dunno

Why does Beth Moore do Bible studies on books that are not in the Protestant Bible like Esther, Daniel, etc.

Those books are in the Protestant bible, they just have some chapters that are missing. So without knowing about these bible studies, I’m going to assume it is the books that have the passages missing.

Beth Moore is a Southern Baptist, although her conferences and Bible studies are done by her own organization. She is a tremendously gifted speaker and draws huge crowds. She also has a pretty good understanding of scripture. I would say the main area where her views clash with Catholic views is on salvation by faith alone. If she is covering scripture that deals with this topic she will not be well received by Catholics. (Estesbob, this is mostly in Romans and Ephesians, not in Galatians.) The posters who say she never speaks ill of other Christian beliefs are correct. I have read a lot of her stuff and have never seen anything that slams another’s faith.

You are correct. I have been in numerous Beth Moore bible studies, and she never slams those of another faith. She also knows scripture very well, and my experiences with her studies have always drawn me closer to Christ. We have had Catholic women in those studies and never had a conflict of any kind.

I feel I must respond about Beth Moore. As a solid, long-believing Catholic woman, I have to applaud Moore for her incite, passion, and love for Jesus. She has never said anything that I find remotely objectionable about Catholicism, Christianity, our Lord, God, or anything I could vaguely infer as heretical. She is enormously in love with Christ, abundantly schooled in Scripture (which many Catholics are ignorant), and keeps publicly praying for grace and direction in her walk of faith and belief in our Lord of Lords. What must a non-Catholic do to gain respect? She is a Christian, a BELIEVER…please, show this woman the heart and respect that she is due. Thank God for people like her…the uncircumcised preaching to the “circumcised.” Where is your humility and gratitude? Amen.
