Some of you may be aware of, or followed the saga of St Mary’s Parish South Brisbane, here in Australia. Last week the priest Fr Kennedy was directed to stand down by the Archbishop of Brisbane, for liturgigal abuses that led the Archbishop to believe Fr Kennedy was not in communion with Rome.

This is the latest sordid event in this saga:

The Catholic Archdiocese of Brisbane says Archbishop John Bathersby **has been the target of a bomb threat **following the controversy surrounding St Mary’s church.

A police spokesman confirmed a bomb threat had been made.

“The informant contacted police this morning to report a bomb threat had been received in a letter,” the spokesman said.

“Details of the threats made in the letter will not be disclosed by police and investigations are continuing.”

A spokesman for the Catholic Archdiocese of Brisbane said the threat was received at the Archbishop’s office on Friday.

He confirmed that the Archbishop’s residence was the target in the letter.

“It made mention of St Mary’s, but that’s now in the hands of police,” the spokesman said.

But the spokesman refused to confirm whether the letter was written by someone who supported rebel 71-year-old priest Father Peter Kennedy, or a supporter of the Catholic Archdiocese.

St Mary’s has been the centre of controversy in recent months, with Fr Kennedy attracting the stern eye of the Vatican itself.

The congregation of 700 has a unique ministry in inner-city Brisbane, widely acknowledged as a haven for the poor, the marginalised, indigenous people, homosexuals and broken families.

Fr Kennedy was sacked from his ministry at St Mary’s parish on Thursday by Brisbane Archbishop Bathersby for breaching church rules.

Fr Ken Howell has been appointed to replace Fr Kennedy, and the two recently met face to face.

At that meeting, Fr Kennedy refused to hand over the keys to the Parish buildings, including the church, and told Fr Howell that he would officiate at all Masses this weekend.

Fr Howell was also told by the Queensland Police Service not to attend Masses at St Mary’s this weekend for his own safety.

Bolding and emphasis mine. I’m disgusted that folks who call themselves Catholic can send an Archbishop, what is to all intents and purposes, a death threat. And the replacement pastor has been warned by police not to attend Mass for his own safety!!! Seriously WTF is going on?

Archbishop Bathersby is a very good humble and honest man and priest. I ask the Lord to keep His Angels around him, and around Father Howell and St Mary’s.

Only one word for these so-called “Catholics” (the ones who sent the threat) and Fr. Kennedy:

Disgusting.

I don’t know Abp Bathersby Trishie so I will have to take your word for it but I would like to ask him why he left Peter Kennedy at the parish for 28 years knowing of the invalid baptisms and the goings on at St Marys. Peter Kennedy on his blog has this to say about the archbishop.

In reply to Adam
Over the years I have often expressed gratitude to the Archbishop for letting us be. He has said we have a right to exist as a liberal wing of the church

Sometimes one is left to wonder how it could come this far especially when a priest has views as Father Kennedy holds them.
These are excerpted words as recorded in an interview by Richard Fidler ABC radio with Fr Peter Kennedy of St Mary’s South Brisbane in January:
Q: “Do you still think there’s a hell now?”
A: “No, not at all! [chuckle] The Pope does! [laugh]
But, um – no.”
Q: “Do you think there’s a heaven?”
A: “No.”
Q: “Do you think there is an afterlife?”
A: [pause] I personally think that life is such an incredible mystery …"
This priest is leading astray a whole community, seems Archbishop Bathersby has already waited too long.

Ugh. Did you see the photos of the “Masses” there? They have the bread and wine strewn on an old, table turned sideways down the aisle of the church (the altar is in the background collecting dust) and the pews have been removed and people just sit all over the floor like it’s a campfire meeting. It’s terrible, full of abuse and sacrilege.

I’m glad this priest is getting the boot. He deserves it 100%. What he did was outrageous, and I also blame the Archbishop for letting it go for freakin’ 28 years!!!
