BF coming to first Mass with me

The GIRM lists “choir alone” as a valid option for: Entrance Hymn, Gloria, Offertory Hymn & Communion Hymn. The only thing that the GIRM says should be sung by the people are the acclamations, the responses and, if one is sung, the hymn after Communion. We’ve been so brainwashed that we MUST sing everything that we refuse to allow the choir the possibility of exercising its ministry in a way that the church says is perfectly valid.

Full active conscious participation can mean listening to a hymn, not just singing it.

I can’t remember where it states it, but we are told that if a Communion Hymn is sung, we are to sing it. I am going to assume that this is an OF Mass, where the norm is for everyone to sing. If the OPs BF does not want to, that is his prerogative.

As someone who has been in music ministry, there is nothing more frustrating than the congregation thinking that what we do in entertainment, rather than leading. We are there to help lead our Brothers and Sisters in praising our Lord, not to entertain them.
The OF Mass is a Mass of participation, and the congregation should participate.

As far as communion goes this is what the GIRM says:
  1. In the dioceses of the United States of America there are four options for the Communion chant: (1) the antiphon from the Roman Missal or the Psalm from the Roman Gradual as set to music there or in another musical setting; (2) the seasonal antiphon and Psalm of the Simple Gradual; (3) a song from another collection of psalms and antiphons, approved by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops or the Diocesan Bishop, including psalms arranged in responsorial or metrical forms; (4) a suitable liturgical song chosen in accordance with no. 86 above. This is sung either by the choir alone or by the choir or cantor with the people.
If there is no singing, however, the Communion antiphon found in the Missal may be recited either by the faithful, or by some of them, or by a lector. Otherwise the priest himself says it after he has received Communion and before he distributes Communion to the faithful.
  1. When the distribution of Communion is finished, as circumstances suggest, the priest and faithful spend some time praying privately. If desired, a psalm or other canticle of praise or a hymn may also be sung by the entire congregation.

My boyfriend started to go to Mass with me. Thirty-one and a half years later, we still go to Mass together, only now he’s Catholic and we are married. He made his First Communion at our wedding Mass.🙂

My husband went to mass with me recently. He had not attended mass in over 12 years (he is protestant). I did not realize that he was behind me in the eucharist line until after he had received :eek: He now knows. I am hoping to slowly convert him. He really liked the service. Prayers are appreciated :signofcross:

I’m so happy for you. My son is going to Mass with my husband and I Christmas Eve for the first time.

My husband and I were received into the church December 20, 2006. My son is 19 and has never been to Mass but I’m praying, praying, praying that some day he will be Catholic. I’m so excited for him to go to Mass with us! That’s the best Christmas present ever.

Being a convert… My 1st Mass experience was the long Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve with my future wife… She just told me to sit all the time through the Mass and when she and her family went to communion I was to just stay seated… This worked out just fine… It was long (Smile) but beautiful and I learned alot just from that Mass… God Bless you and your boy friend for him having the forethought to go with you… That shows his love for you…

P.S. My loving wife and I have now been married for 52 years and five grown lovely children… 🙂
