So my darling BF (a Tibetan Buddhist) and I were leaving Mass yesterday, and he turned to me and said, “Honey, I’m considering becoming a Catholic.”
Obviously, I’m happy for him, but I would not have been more surprised if he had said, “Honey, I’m thinking of becoming a duck.”
This has been banging around in his head for several weeks, and he even said to me that if he were anything but Buddhist he’d be a Catholic. He participated in Mass yesterday, which he’s never done. He has come with me almost every Sunday since we’ve been together, but yesterday he said all the responses for the first time. Perfectly, I might add, as though he had been coming for years. That was great too, but I wasn’t sure how to respond. The idea has been a little upsetting to him–he has been very sure he wanted to be a Buddhist for many years, and is in the process of becoming what they call a Householder (think “third order”). He’s feeling confused and he seems a little sad.
I told him that I’d like to stay more or less aloof from the process, because it’s important to me that he convert for Christ and not for me. I’ll put him in touch with our religious education director and a few other Catholics and sources of information and I am happy to discuss it if I am asked. And I told him I thought it was wonderful that he was committed to following the right path, even if it isn’t what he thought it was.
So anyway, please pray for him as he decides.
