I didn’t suggest that it shouldn’t be.

Look up the women’s rights movements, the various ethnic rights movements, McCarthyism, the Scopes trial, and any detailed history of education in the C20th.

People don’t want equality; that’s why they work so hard to rise above.

You obviously missed the author’s point.

I didn’t miss it: I ignored it. Cherrypicking individual cases in an attempt to make the UK look worse than the US only demonstrates the enthusiastic bias of the writer.

Undoubtedly they were following the lead of their administrations. That is what subordinates do. This sort of thing is not without precedent:
