Take it slow then. Show me something extrabiblical that you can prove comes from Jesus. I have read all the earliest documents.
We both believe the Bible. Great. So move onto this other thing I need to believe.
Prove one.
I do not think that is unreasonable.
You are 100% right to have this thought…so please start a thread with the question.

This thread is concerning trying to figure out how, if the Bible is sole authority, why it does not plainly say this to us.

Who cares about that. I am talking about 2008. I am talking about Jesus Christ changing my life. I am talking about lives changed.
Quit living in the past. It causes your hatred of us.
If you want Jesus to changed your life. Then join the Catholic Church, because he is the CEO of the Catholic Church. No one has to right to divide His Church. PERIOD.

The Bible does not say it is the sole authority. It does say the Church has authority not the Bible itself. Since the NT was added into the Scripture by the Church.

It was not the Bible who canonized the Bible in the fourth Century. It was the Church. Church Authority is the final authority.

He already did change my life. It was not a Catholic who led me to Christ. Your church got divided a long time ago when you in the Orthodox could not figure out so called sacred tradition. You guys started the splitting long ago. But I live right now. I am not responsible. My church never split. We follow the Bible. You guys did. Get over it.

My Church is the same as it was 2,000 yrs ago.

Your Church split. Your Church was founded by the Reformers of the 1500s.

You do not even have the Church with the keys of the Kingdom. You do not have Peter. We do. You do not have Antiochean Churches, we do. You do not even have Real Presence of Jesus Christ at Mass. We do.

God is the final authority. Quit calling Jesus a liar. He spoke about scripture a long time before any little synod in Africa. Quit trying to make God’s work your work.
God is the final authority. Do you believe Jesus? Do you believe Paul when he said that scripture was inspired? Did the Catholic church decide that? No. God did.

My church was formed from the Bible and we have never split. Nice try. You do not have Peter. We do. It is in the Bible. He wrote his church two letters, we read them and follow them. He never said anything about following some bishop in Rome. I believe Peter. I wish you would too.

Thank you!

Now…I am still waiting for an answer to the original post…or is it that there is no answer and this above post that is being quoted is the answer?

God is the final authority. Quit calling Jesus a liar.
God, the Father send Jesus Christ. Jesus sent his Apostles. The Apostles sent their successors the Bishops. God gave them the authority.
He spoke about scripture a long time before any little synod in Africa. Quit trying to make God’s work your work.
The NT was not part of Scripture until the Synod. The Scripture of Jesus times were all Old Text to include the Deutrocanonical Books which your Protestants rejected as non-inspirational.

If you truly believe that the Scripture is inspire then by what authority gave you the right to remove the 7 Deutroncanonical Books?

The only authority that stem from was from Non-Christian authority from the Council of Jamnia by Jews (who do not believe in Jesus Christ).
God is the final authority. Do you believe Jesus? Do you believe Paul when he said that scripture was inspired? Did the Catholic church decide that? No. God did.
God gave his authority to his Church. When the Church speaks in moral in faith, it is Jesus who speaks. “He who hears you, hears me, he who rejects you rejects me. He who rejects me rejects the one who sent me.”

St. Paul did say that all of Scripture is inspired. It did not say Scripture alone is inspired.

Thank you!

I am busy going tit for tat with Manny. Rational discourse must take a break…in the words of Gov Palin…I will get back with you!

The Orthodox BROKE AWAY IN UNITY WITH THE POPE in 1054. Their loss.

If it wasn’t for the Catholic church, you wouldn’t have a bible. You know little about church history.

LOL!

Fair enough…I need to give my buttocks a rest from this chair anyways.

Please remember Rightlydivide…I am not trying to get you to disbelieve the Bible, in actual fact, I am not (right now) trying to get you to adhere to my beliefs (though admittedly I am sure that is subconsciously a goal of mine)…

Rather, I am earnestly trying to understand where the belief of the Bible being the sole authority comes from. This is not a baiting thread…I just truly want to know.

No he did not. That is not what Paul describles as the role of the bishop.
The NT was not part of Scripture until the Synod. The Scripture of Jesus times were all Old Text to include the Deutrocanonical Books which your Protestants rejected as non-inspirational.
Completelty not true. There are no surviving copies of the LXX from this time. The earliest ones 300 years later.
If you truly believe that the Scripture is inspire then by what authority gave you the right to remove the 7 Deutroncanonical Books?
The LXX was in flux in 33 AD. Any Catholic seminarian in his first year knows that. Name one reputable scholar who contends the LXX was not in flux in 30 AD. One. Anyone.
The only authority that stem from was from Non-Christian authority from the Council of Jamnia by Jews (who do not believe in Jesus Christ).
There was no Jamnia. Where did you go to seminary? University of Google Search?

Gods. There was no Catholic church then.

God gave us the Bible. Your arrogance is offensive. There was 2/3 of the Bible before Catholics were around. Its time to believe that God is in control.

If you believe in the Bible, and there are lots of reasons for that, the only real question is if there is some other authority. That is where we have to look at tradition.

No he did not. That is not what Paul describles as the role of the bishop.
The role of the bishop is to sheperd the people of God. When St. Paul died and the rest of the Apostles, when whose authority do we go by?
Completelty not true. There are no surviving copies of the LXX from this time. The earliest ones 300 years later.
The copies of the original Scriptures were written by monoastic religious men.
The LXX was in flux in 33 AD. Any Catholic seminarian in his first year knows that. Name one reputable scholar who contends the LXX was not in flux in 30 AD. One. Anyone.
Here is the info on the LXX.

The Septuagint (IPA: /ˈsɛptuədʒɪnt/), or simply “LXX”, is the Koine Greek version of the Hebrew Bible, translated in stages between the 3rd and 1st centuries BC in Alexandria.

This has been a part of the Christian Canon since the 3rd Century. In those days, there were many Gospels and by the third Century, two well know African Synods made a list of which books of the Bible are inspired. It was Council of Hippo and Council of Carthage. Another Synod was in the Council of Rome in 382 AD set forth by Pope Damascus I. The list he included included the Deutrocanonical Books.
There was no Jamnia. Where did you go to seminary? University of Google Search?
The Council of Jamnia took place in 90 AD. Some Protestant scholars use this council as the reasons to deny the Deutrocanonical Books. They rejected Scripture that was not written in Hebrew.

Some scholars today speculate this Council never took place. Regardless of the fact. It was not until the 1700s or later date the Protestant Bible remove the 7 Deutrocanonical Books.
By what authority was Paul saying there was scripture Manny?
Gods. There was no Catholic church then.
Oh there was. The Pope then was St. Peter, whom Jesus Christ build his Church upon. You reject this, you reject the Word of God.

If you believe in the Bible, and there are lots of reasons for that, the only real question is if there is some other authority. That is where we have to look at tradition.
I understand your point…
…though it does not answer my question.

It is very revealing that RD, through all his posts so far, has not provided one piece of Scripture to defend the “Bible as sole authority” position. Instead, he has built a straw man (“Catholics don’t believe the Bible” and “Catholics try to convince non-Catholics to not believe the Bible” etc…).
Take it slow then. Show me something extrabiblical that you can prove comes from Jesus. I have read all the earliest documents.
We both believe the Bible. Great. So move onto this other thing I need to believe.
Prove one.
I do not think that is unreasonable.
Don’t you need to believe the Books in the Bible are the books meant to be in the Bible?
Such a list is not in the Bible…
