What makes you think that Christ is talking about the Scriptures here? The scriptures tell us Who God’s word is:
What makes you think He isn’t. Do you think that it’s an accident that He took Word (logos) to indicate who He was. Further on in Jn17 we read 21That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
22And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:
23I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.
How do you think we become one with the Father and the Son
1I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.
2Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.
**3Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. **
4Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
5I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
6If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
7If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
8Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.
9As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.
10If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.
We abide (live) in the WORD OF GOD. We abide in Christ and He in us thru the WORD OF GOD.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. Jn 1:1,14
And Christ tells us what Truth is:
Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life Jn 14:6
Sanctify them in the truth; thy word is truth.
Is talking about Christ. Christ then, after this, goes on to declare, in the very next verse, that He was sent into the world:
As thou didst send me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. Jn 17:18
I agree with everything you say here.
That is an interesting verse to quote in support of SS. Reading the verse directly before and after Jn 5:39 it appears that Christ is rejecting SS:
and you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe him whom he has sent. You search the scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness to me; yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life. Jn 5:38-39 He is not telling these people to search the Scriptures, He is admonishing them that though they search the Scriptures, 'because you think in them you have eternal life" they miss Who He is and What He came to do. These people are searching the Scriptures because they, “think in them” they “have eternal life.” And yet Christ tells us these people, “do not have his word abiding” in them. These people have applied SS, have “searched the Scriptures” and deny Christ. I cannot see how this is a good verse to support SS.
I really don’t understand how you can get from these vs. that Jesus is rejecting SS. While He does rebuke the people He is talking to for not recognizing who He is. He still says:
You search the scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness to me; He is saying that the scriptures that they think have eternal life are the ones that bear witness of Him. Seems pretty clear to me.
Then there is Luke 3:16John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire: Well how do we get baptized (anointed) with the Holy Spirit? 1Jn.2:27But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of
all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him. What are the
truth and** all things **that this is talking about Jn14:23Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my
words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
24He that loveth me not keepeth not my **sayings: and the word **which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.
25These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you.
26But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall
teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
Well, it’s the WORD OF GOD That the Spirit of God will bring to our remembrance, if we abide (live) in THE WORD OF GOD, Jesus!!!
