Actually, I think very highly of Catholics - half my relatives are Catholic.

I have had people challenge me on slavery and several other verses many times. I always say a little pray that God let them hear what He wants to say to them - despite what I might say. Then I look up the verse and read the passage in it’s entirety. Sometimes I cross reference to give background or show what that verse is referring to. This method has worked very well for me. Some people even signed up for a Bible study. Prayer is the most important element in witnessing. We can do nothing apart from God.
If it’s an atheist, they really don’t want an answer and will keep asking news questions without listening to what you say. They think you are wrong so why bother listening to your answer when they can spend that time thinking up the next question.
