Bible commentary/ catena

I am getting ready to create a new site for a Bible commentary, and it will be a catena, which means it will be made up of an ongoing commentary of Scripture that is based upon the Early Church Fathers, but I will be adding stuff from later Doctors and Saints of the Church as well. The commentaries will be very similar to the Catena Aurea of St. Thomas Aquinas and the Ancient Christian Commentary series. This is something that I love to do, and it will be a project that I will do over time.

What I am interested in is some opinions and thoughts on what others would like to have, such as what you would like to see done first, like what book of the Bible would you like to have done. And, if anyone feels interested in contributing to this project then let me know as well, but a fair knowledge of Scripture and the Church Fathers is needed.

Your reinventing the wheel here, I don’t think you are going to outdo St. Thomas Aquinas my friend.

Copland - It sounds very interesting and I would love to take a look after you are done. I am not yet qualified to give you a hand, but if I could I would. Best of luck.

Trust me, I am not trying to outdo anybody, especially the great St. Thomas Aquinas. Nor am I trying to invent anything new or original, I just love Scripture and the Fathers, and I have a lot of their commentaries and writings that can be gleaned from in order to add to those catenas that already exist. It sure can’t hurt to have more catenas on hand, the only ones we have in English now are the Catena Aurea and the Ancient Christian Commentary, and the Catena Aurea has only the 4 Gospels, and the Ancient Christian Commentary, though it is quite valuable, it does leave plenty to be desired, especially for the Catholic, since it is a Protestant work.

Not reinventing the wheel, refining and enlarging maybe. The Catena Aurea, is far from comprehensive, albeit very useful. IOW, there’s much that could be done by way of building on it.

Like St. Thomas, I hope you start with the New Testament, beginning with the Gospels. They are the most well known, and are the basis of most people’s inquiries. 😉
 
Since we already have the Catena of St. Thomas on the Gospels, I suggest that you start with the Epistles.

Which version of Scripture will you be using?

Do you recommend one for me to use? I will surely favor your recommendations, as I often do.
 
I have some catenas that I have done within the last 5 years, but I would like to tweak them.

I think the Catena Aurea would be better if it was designed to be more user friendly, which is something that I would like to accomplish for when I get to the Gospels. There is not much to add to what St. Thomas put together, other than maybe some insights from later Church Doctors and Saints, like St. Thomas himself and others like St. Bonaventure. I want to add some of these later Saints because they always consulted the early Fathers but also provide some doctrinal development that can only make it better. But I want to stay within the continuity of Early Church Father thought and not get into modernist stuff.

Much of the commentary on the Bible in Church history was based on the Latin Vulgate. So I suggest using the Challoner text, perhaps even with the Latin for each verse also.
 
One very big wheel out there is the Biblia Clerus freeware from the Vatican, it includes NAB, RSV-CE, commentaries inc. Matt & Mark from Aquinas, Church Fathers, Council documents, &c, &c.
