I have a question to my fellow Eastern Catholics, in your churches is their a definite understanding of which concepts in the bible are understood to be literal and moral? I ask this question because recently I went to a number of retreats, the Syro Malabar priests were preaching about the nature of Heaven and Hell. It astounded me that these priests stated Heaven and Hell are both on Earth and that we as servants of our Mishiha create a “Heaven” and a “Hell” in our own homes based on our level of faith. If I was not mistaken they were preaching that Heaven and Hell are only figures that we create and not in reality places of tranquility or despair. Of course I do understand that the holy book can be interpreted in numerous understandings and views but what I heard at the retreats really shook me.

To my understanding and ecclesiastic studies of the bible and my church, the Syro Malabar Church has always viewed Heaven and Hell as being true in nature and physical realms, along with an area we call Paradisi or Paradisa (Paradise) included as well. Please do leave your opinions and comments, perhaps some of you may have also heard of this “idea” of Heaven and Hell.
