Not sure what area to post this under so I hope this is the right place.

As I understand it the Bible is not technically copyrighted but the translations are. It’d like to be able to post daily readings on a website but can’t find a translation that would allow me to. I checked the USCCB website and they specifically prohibit the posting of daily readings from the NAB on any website. Are there any Catholic translations that are not copyrighted? I suppose if an old enough translation is used the copyright would be expired. If so, what would be a good Catholic Bible to use?

Thanks…

the bishops do not allow anyone to post the daily readings so that they can protect the wording from being changed, shortened etc. A Catholic site can post a link to the USCCB daily readings, as catholicexchange.com does, for instance, so why would you need to post them yourself?

Oh, boy, here we go: why would you want to post from the NAB - when you can post from the vastly superior Douay-Rheims, which IS in the public domain?

Their policy doesn’t have to be so draconian to prevent that. The sites they have cracked down on and have complied are Catholic apologetics sites – exactly the people they should want getting the NAB out there. Anyone else they will still have to take to court for copyright infringement.

As a convenience to his site visitors? Does it matter? The Bishops’ policy is still foolish and short-sighted.

OTOH, the RSV-CE has a much more generous permissions policy than the USCCB so OP can post the daily readings using that.

Perhaps because the daily readings at Mass are taken from the NAB

I would check the different Catholic sites that have daily readings, and see if any of them offer a direct link that would show up on your web page.

You can always put a link on your site to the other site’s daily reading. That is what I do with my site; basically, I wrote a little PHP script to read the links automatically and have them display on my site. Users will be redirected to the other site when clicking on the links.

The RSV-CE is NOT available online; several of us have looked long and hard and were disppointed.

I was referring to their permissions policy, they will let you quote fiarly large chunks w/o asking for use on blogs, websites, &c.

Also, you can get the daily readings from Yahoo! or Google groups and they use the RSV-CE.

If you want to post the RSV-CE onyour site you’ll probably have to buy it on CD-ROM.
