So while the earlier written Quran talks of Christians and Jews in good terms and they should be respected and indeed even asked for truth. The later Quran calls them infidels and that they should be allowed to convert and if not well, that’s too bad.
What do you mean the “earlier written Quran” and the “later Quran”? Is it that different parts of the Quran were written later?

Well, the Quran was written over time as Mohammed experienced his visions from Gabriel. As indicated, some of the later visions directly conflict with the earlier ones (the Quran is written along the time line that it was “revealed”).

So the Moslem must learn not only what is in the Quran, but in what order, for if two passages address the same issue, it is the latter passage that has precedence over the earlier.

Ah! Righty ho. 👍

That’s actually a pretty lame excuse for all those contradictions, especially when a lot of muslims say the Quran was “revealed” for the sole reason that the the past texts (i.e. Bible etc.) had contradictions and were “corrupt” as they call it (which I think just means wrong).

When I replied to the messages at the start of this thread, after I sent reasons why the 34 “contradictions” weren’t actually contradictions I sent him some contradictions from the Quran (which I found on the internet) and a lot of them were even in the same chapter!

Muslims especially those not secularly educated generally have a whole folk religion built up around the Quran, one which is just absolutely filled with myths.

They will tell you they have the original. They don’t. That was written on leaves and rocks and bones and whatever. At least some of those who tried to compile and standardize the Quran complained of the difficulty of trying to assemble it.

They will tell you that there were a bunch of people memorized it and they perfectly agreed. Well, partly correct. The Quran has basically been assembled from memory. One of the overiding reasons for this was the memorized versions were getting different. At least some of the parts of the Quran were only “remembered” by one or a few people.

They will say all Arabic versions are in complete textual agreement and use that to say it is God protecting the Quran. A false postion held through ignorance, but very commonly taught. Just google “textual criticism Koran” and you will more than enough to completely destroy that myth. Although realize that folk religion is very tightly held beliefs and often even when confronted with clear refutation people just cannot, at first, actually believe they are wrong.

Muslims will even think the Quran is speaking of the God of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob. It is true the god of the Quran is at least in part based on God. But it is also true that the god of the Quran is at least in part based on the pagan gods in Mohammed’s culture of the time.

For example. The Quran teaches that god has daughters.

This comes from the Moon God, Allah. He had three daughters, Al-Lat, Al-Uzza, and Manat. Guess what, the god of the Quran has these same daughters. (the Moon god is why the moon is so strong in Muslim imagery and is also the reason Muslims pray facing Mecca, since that is the location of his temple.)

Sura 53: 19 Have ye thought upon Al-Lat and Al-'Uzza
20 And Manat, the third, the other?
21 Are yours the males and His the females?
22 That indeed were an unfair division!

The verses are speaking of how the men are so proud and see it as a blessing to have sons and not daughters, yet Mohammed points out that god has daughters.

Remember when studying the Quran the context. Mohammed was an illiterate war lord. A person concerned with reform. What we see is he took from the culture around him and spun it into a bunch of sayings and teachings. And we never will know how true to the original the Quran of today is. Most of what was available at the time the Quran of today was assembled was intentionally destroyed. We can see reading it that Mohammed did not understand Christianity. He appears to have understood the Trinity as the Father, Son, and Mother, Mary. He doesn’t see the Holy Spirit as a person of the Trinity at all. So either he was familiar with one of the Marian cults or he just didn’t understand the Trinity, in any case he thought the Trinity contradicted that God is one.

When things were going poorly for Mohammed and his group, well he liked others a lot. But when he came into power, then it was conform or die. Very human of him.
