i would love to state my feelings about scott hahn, but that would be going off topic and then someone would notify the moderator and we would get a warning. so i won’t respond.
You already stated your feelings about Scott Hahn, now you’re just refusing to back them up with any evidence.

Throwing out little comments like “I’m sceptical of Scott Hahn being faithful to Catholic teaching” and then refusing to give any evidence seems very dishonest to me. Seems like detraction.

I don’t see this priest’s name anywhere in this version. I have the Saint Joseph Edition. Can you recommend a more authentic version or another bible that I can study from that will hold true to the teachings of the church?

There is nothing wrong with it doctrinally. It has the Imprimatur & Nihil Obstat, & these are judgement by the censor (who probably knows a little more about what is orthodox & what is not than people on CAF) that there is nothing against faith and morals in that book.

People don’t have to use the notes - but they have no right to question the orthodoxy of those who write, approve, recommend, or use them. Those who see error where the Church’s authorities do not, are guilty of great arrogance & presumption.

Amen to what you said about Fr. Raymond Brown. I did some research on him and found out he definitely had some heretical ideas. Another poster mentioned the “Catholic Answer Bible”, which I have, and the notes are done by Dave Armstrong, who is a convert to the Catholic faith, an apologist and orthodox Catholic.
Oh really? Have his writings been pulled, banned?.You don’t determine who is heretical- the Church does.Raymond Brown was considered a bulwark between ultra-right and ultra left. 😦

Okay what’s wrong with him ? Untrustworthy because he’s a convert? Yeah maybe he’s still in secret a protestant who has been sent to destroy biblical theology!!!LOLHe writes frequently for The Catholic Biblical Quarterly-(I guess that makes that publication suspect!). and is highly respected. He’s dynamic and brings a passion to biblical studies that many should emulate.:Isit because he teaches at Steubenville?

i was agreeing with the person who wrote post #10. this topic is on bible footnotes though, not scott hahn.

It is quite a stretch to believe you have found that one of the most significant Catholic scripture scholars - a man twice appointed to the Pontifical Biblical Commision by two different popes - published heretical ideas. He made have had some in his secret inner thoughts but his public writings, most all of which were covered by the imprimatur and nihil obstat have NOT been condemned. I’m sure you can find those who don’t like his writings but that is irrelevant.

The concept of “Q” does not go against a single doctrine of the Church and may certainly be held as a personal belief. I agree it should not be presented as dogmatic church teaching but anyone seriously studying the scriptures should at least be aware of it.
Monsignor George Kelly wrote an article for *Catholic Dossier *on Fr. Raymond Brown detailing his accomplishments but also his departures from truth. Also, a priest who is a personal friend of mine was in a class taught by Fr Brown, and he said Fr. Brown was always able to avoid getting into trouble because he would always present what the Church taught and then follow it with “but. . .” and his own particular heretical ideas.

OK, great news. I started a thread here about Scott Hahn, so you can post your opinions about him, complete with evidence from his writings of how he is not faithful to the teachings of the Catholic Church.

okay, you have already jumped to way too many accusations. when i said i was a skeptic of scott hahn, i wasn’t referring to anything he has written about scripture. sorry if you took it that way.

So, what are you sceptical of then if it’s not what he’s written? You don’t like the way he looks?

that’s funny. you should put your attention back to bible footnotes.

Here’s what the Navarre Bible footnotes say about Exodus 20:16

Giving false testimony in court can cause one’s neighbour irreparable damage because an innocent person may be found guilty. But, given that truth and fidelity in human relationships is the basis of social life (cf Vatican II, Gaudium et spes, 26),this commandment prohibits lying, defamation (cf. Sir 7:12-13), calumny and the saying of anything that might detract from a neighbour’s dignity (cf Jas 3:1-12). “This moral prescription flows from the vocation of the holy people to bear witness to God who is the truth and wills the truth. Offences against the truth express by word or deed a refusal to commit oneself to moral uprightness; they are fundamental infidelities to God and, in this sense, they undermine the foundations of the covenant” (Cathechism of the Catholic Church, 2464)

By what standard are those ideas heretical ? Yours ? Your friend’s ? Father Kelly’s ? Father Brown’s ? C.A.F.'s ? The Church’s ?

So, saying “…but…”, as described, does not amount to anything.

What some people call heresy is very often nothing of the kind. So far, all we have is suspicion, but no substance whatever. Unless there is some substance in these accusations, rather than this endless whispering campaign, there is no case to answer. These attacks on a dead priest never even censured (let alone punished) for his alleged unorthodoxy are a disgrace; they are really scandalous. If this is orthodoxy, may God save us all from it. 😦

Unfortunately, you cannot always rely on the Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur. For instance, the Nihil Obstat for Fr. Brown’s *New Jerome Biblical Commentary *was issued by…Fr. Brown himself (along with 2 of his editors).

Why don’t you read Msgr Kelly’s article? He talks about a book authored by Fr. Brown that actually shook the faith of many of the Catholics who read it because it cast doubt on Jesus’ institution of the priesthood. I would call that heretical, wouldn’t you?

In the Old Testament the Shekinah is considered in Judaism as the"feminine’ part of God.In Theology/Biblical studies the Shekinah is a type in the OT of the HS. That is probably the connection that he was trying to make.I actually Believe BR. Bob On EWTN made the connection…God In the OT does have a 'maternal " aspect. Caring for His children-in the Middle East culture the women nurture- not the men. So God does have what could be called a “feminine” side.Oh the horror:eek: .Feminine doesn’t mean feminist. Women are God’s creation also by the way worthy of dignity .

i am not positive about this, but i was once at a friday evening shabbat service and during part of the service they turn back and look and wait for the “feminine” or “bride” or “shekinah” to enter if i remember correctly. it was several years ago. at the time it didn’t make since at all to me.

i still tend to think of the Holy Spirit not as maternal.

i think of the holy catholic church as maternal.

does that make sense?

Oh and yes, I don’t believe EWTN is the center of ultra liberal biblical studies  - to even say so is silly to the extreme.😛 He is well within the parameters of Dei Verbum- and again unless the Magisterium corrects him- I have no problem with him.Whatever you may think he does know his stuff - he is erudite and well respected by Catholic Biblical scholars So no matter what some malcontents say- he is a catholic in good standing.

And God Himself is love; and out of love to us became feminine. In His ineffable essence He is Father; in His compassion to us He became Mother. The Father by loving became feminine: and the great proof of this is He whom He begot of Himself: and the fruit brought forth by love is love.

[T]he innocent and unbegotten Adam being the type and resemblance of God the Father Almighty, who is uncaused, and the cause of all; his begotten son [Seth] shadowing forth the image of the begotten Son and Word of God; whilst Eve, that proceedeth forth from Adam, signifies the person and procession of the Holy Spirit.
