"Bible for Dummies"

Hello,

I don’t know if this is the right forum for this, but I wanted to know if any of you own or have read the Bible for Dummies (or it’s Idiot’s counterpart)?

I’ve read that the Catholic for Dummies is pretty good (actually, I have it and I know it is) and the Idiots version not quite on the mark.

But, I’ve only been “back” for about two years, so I’m still feeling my way around about what I can trust for reading material that isn’t specifically Catholic.

I wouldn’t use the “bible for dummies” book because it’s a book for Protestant “dummies”.

I would encourage you to go with Catholic resources only when it comes to the bible.

The Great Adventure Bible Study is very good for a beginner, but pricey unless it’s offered at your parish or you can check out the videos from your diocese (many diocese have lending libraries for multimedia).

Fr. Trigilio and Brighenti (sp?) wrote a Bible version of their Catholicism for Dummies but it is under a different name. It is called “The Essential Bible” and it is pretty good. I bought mine for $7 in the bargain aisle at Borders.

Agreed, this is not a “Catholic” Bible for Dummies. I believe it is in this one when it speaks of when the Bible became Canon instead of saying that it was Catholic councils that developed and agreed upon it, it say “some wise men” determined the Canon.

I agree with the comments re The Bible For Dummies The authors haven’t lied but they have massaged the truth to expunge the Catholicity of the bible.

The Authors are" Dr Jeffrey Geoghegan who teaches at Boston College - nominally Catholic and Dr Michael Homan who teaches at Xavier University of Lousiana - nominally Catholic. So why are we surprised at the Protestant slant

As a rule…I never use non-Catholic sources. I am that way for a reason. I’m going to try and soft pedal this… The reason is because while the non-Catholic source may quote scriptures…it will almost never fail that somewhere within the document, web-site or item, a sometimes not so clearly defined or even an outright attack on our faith and beliefs will be present.

Someone gave my wife something recently that the giver intended for our granddaughter…it looked OK on its surface, it was a kind of “comic-book thing”…but once you got into it…it was certainly not Catholic…in fact it was pointedly “anti-Catholic”. It went directly against the teachings of the Bible and the Catholic Church.

At the bottom line, it is far better and safer for a Catholic to limit their sources to Catholic sources. Keeps heresy and all the rest of the nonsense away…

I might add that I am a “revert”…so “Welcome HOME”!!
