There have been a lot of threads here discussing which English translation is the best. How about Spanish Bibles? Can anyone recommend a good translation of the Bible in Spanish? By good I mean the text and the footnotes.

Ok I am taking a total stab in the dark, but I think that the University of Navarre as in the Navarre bible studies has the original version of their bible studies in Spanish.

Other than that I think I heard about a NJB or a JB Spanish edition being decent but that was about a year ago I heard a rumor of that.

Thanks. I knew about the Spanish JB but didn’t know if it still available. I’ll take a look.

I’m trying to learn Spanish - got my copy of Rosetta Stone - and want to practice my reading skills by reading the Bible. I just don’t want to end up with a version done by liberation theology types or even one as badly done as the NAB. Non-heretical footnotes would be a a nice touch, also.

Does anyone know which version is used in Spanish Masses?

Gary

I actually started a thread about language learning in the back fence forum. Foreign language is a big weakness of mine, so perhaps the advice that others gave me might help you out too.

Good Luck!

Also I would assume that the bible used for spanish masses would depend on where exactly you were. Like in the US we have the Bishop’s conference to decide which to be used in mass here. Well depending on whether you’re in Spain or Mexico or El Salvador might change the version you might read. So I guess the question then becomes what type of Spanish are you trying to learn? The answer will tell you which conference of bishops you need to check out to see what bible they recommend.

I guess I’m just chauvinistic. 😉 I was thinking about what translations is used in Spanish Masses in the USA.

I would recommend the Biblia de Jerusalen Latinoamericana because it had excellent commentary and a traditional view of the books of the Bible.

In Spanish search for the following:
  1. Nueva Biblia de Jerusalem. Is the one that is used in the Lectionary and in the Spanish part of Biblia Clerus.
Available in both single book readers edition, single books with notes, and multiple books studie. I recomend the big letter Readers Edition. The letters are too small in the notes for me!
  2. Biblia de Navarra: There is several books study version and a single book version.
Both are literal translations.
For more dinamic translations search for:
  1. Biblia Latinoamericana (Editorial San Pablo) search for the Formadores edition with extensive notes.
  2. Biblia del Peregrino (Editorial San Pablo). Available in both single and multiple books editions.
For a more classicall Spanish there is the Nacar Colunga.

Thanks. Why do you not like the latinoamericana version of the la biblia de jerusalén?

// i honestly have not read it, but i had a bible (la biblia latinoamericana) and i totally disliked the translation…some parts were a disaster (like the new american bible)…the spanish dialect they use for latin american bibles is dreadful…

// the original biblia de jerusalén is such a beauty, poetic, it’s like if it speaks to one that just drives me crazy in love with it…

// oh i forgot that also the spanish version of catechism of the catholic church (catecismo de la iglesia católica) uses la biblia de jerusalén… 😃
