dosdog;2738243Brosam - This passage specifically excludes YOU - God did not give Any Scripture in the Bible to YOU - You did not Preserve it - YOU did not Translate it - You are Not an ordained member of the TRUE CHURCH protected by the HOLY SPIRIT to Teach it. said:

Actually, I am a member of the “true church” and I have been chosen by the church to teach it.

That’s a bit ad hominem, isn’t it? I’ve met some Catholics that think they are high and mighty.

I do agree with you, though, that to some extent in that even Protestants have traditions. But it’s the fact that “Tradition is the Word of God and in equal Authority to the bible” that gets most Protestants, not just the fact that we have traditions. 🙂

JD
The Bible itself is a Tradition. There is nothing in the Bible that says the Church will go on for 400 years and then men will rise up and God will give them the infallible authority to sift the wheat from the chaf and decide which books were inspired and which were not. Many did not think Revelation or Hebrews were inspired. Some thought the Sheperd of Hermas, the Gospel of Thomas, and others were inspired. So who decided, and after they did decide, why did not the people who wanted the Sheperd of Hermas and others included in the canon continue to view them as Scriptural and go on starting there own church. we have no evidence that they just disagreed and went there seperate ways.
We are now told 1600 years later that these men were inspired by the Holy Spirit the same way insane Martin Luther was, and that they all just agreed and that was it. How come that did not happen to Martin Luther, a man who believed in the Eucharist, was a Catholic priest, and was handed on enough of the faith from the ever so corrupted Catholic Church to start a new pure Church 1500 years later, miraculously. How come they all just didn’tagree with him, the inspired one.

Pardon me but where is all that in the Bible.

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:” -2nd Timothy 3:16

Evidence That the Bible is God’s Word:

Because it claims to be (as read in our Scripture above).

Because It hits the nail right on the head concerning the sinfulness of mankind. 2nd Timothy 3:1-7 reads, “: This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.” Mankind is evil through and through. The humanists say man can improve. The New Age gang says that we can become gods. Evolutionists claim we all came from apes (with NO proof whatsoever). The Mormons say we can become gods. Do you think the American Psychiatric Association is going to tell you that you’re a sinner on your way to Hell if you die in your sins? No! This is not just religion friend, this is YOUR LIFE!!! What Book is there on this earth that gives you the plain truth about mankind and life? THE WORD OF GOD is the only answer! The Bible plainly teaches that man is prone to destruction because man has a sin-nature (Romans 3:10,23;5:12;7:21).

Archaeology is in agreement with the Word of God. Not one spadefull of dirt has ever been uncovered to disprove the Word of God. In fact, many Archaeological expeditions have provided substantial evidence in support of Biblical claims. We don’t need Archeology to prove the Bible, the Bible is evidence enough by itself. Yet, here are more proofs if you need them. The Bible Itself is all the evidence I need.

The Bible is scientifically accurate. Isaiah 40:22 declares that the earth is round. Leviticus 17:11 declares that the life is in the blood. For centuries doctors foolishly drained the blood out of their patients resulting in certain death. The Bible also mentions astronomy, Job 9:9 mentions Arcturus, Orion, and Pleiades. Proverb 17:22 teaches that good health is directly linked to being happy. Psychiatrists offices are overflowing today with the stressed out people. Happiness can only come from being saved and living for the Truth of God’s Word.

The Bible was miraculously written. The Bible was written over a 1,500 year period by 40 different men as God’s Holy Spirit moved through them. There is NO earthly way possible that so many men (most of whom never met each other), could have written so many different books in different styles that all perfectly merge into one meaningful Book, but with God all things are possible!!!

To him who believes, no explanation is necessary; to him that believeth not, no explanation is possible.

Let God be true.
You are right, reason alone is enough to atleast alude to the validity of Scripture as the Word of God, if not prove it all together, but many are given the grace of faith to complete the belief proccess.

My question is, who did God use to gather all of the manuscripts that were thought to have been the inspired Word of God, and to sift the wheat from the chaf, and come up with what we now call the Bible. Thats Assuming the Bible we have today has been protected and uncorrupted by man through translation.

Assuming that this were true, that Roman Catholicism doesn’t follow the Bible doesn’t mean that the Bible isn’t correct.
That does not answer the question. Who did God use in the 4th century to sift the Wheat from the Chaf. Do you think that they all just agreed on what was inspired. I hope not.

Assuming that this were true, that Roman Catholicism doesn’t follow the Bible doesn’t mean that the Bible isn’t correct.
I would also be curious as to where the RC Church does not follow the Scripture. Sincerely, well partially

Throw the bible out. Right now.

Close your eyes and think if you can remember what you need to know about it.

Now throw it out.

Dont use it as a weapon against another. Shameful stuff.

Do what you know you are told to do and go on.

I would also be curious as to where the RC Church does not follow the Scripture. Sincerely, well partially
Among other things, the Bible says not to pray to the dead and you pray to the dead.

The Bible says that Jesus’ blood has cleansed us from all sins and you believe that you still have to go to Purgatory to take care of those “lesser sins” (as though the Bible made a disctinction) that Jesus missed.

The Bible says that Jesus did away with the priestly system of the OC. You still have a priesthood based on it.

The Bible says that Jesus is our redeemer and mediator. You believe that Mary is “co-redeemer” and “co-mediatrix.”

The Bible says that God is eternally pre-existent. You believe that there was a moment in time where God was born. (which of course, begs the questions, “how could God be born unless He already existed to create Mary” and “If Mary is God’s mother, who is God’s father”)

The BIble says that God alone can forgive sin. You believe that you have men who can forgive your sin.

The Bible says that that Jesus founded His church on Peter’s confession. You believe that Jesus founded His church on Peter.

The Bible says that Jesus is the chief cornerstone. You say that Peter is the cornerstone…

Among other things, the Bible says not to pray to the dead and you pray to the dead.
Where in the Bible does it say that saints are dead in Christ. The last time I heard, all saints alive or deceased are alive in Christ.

Here some Biblical verses you probably overlook.

Mk 12:26-27 - he is God of the living, not of the dead
Mk 9:4 - Jesus seen conversing with Elijah & Moses
Lk 9:31 - Elijah & Moses aware of earthly events
Rev 6:9-11 - martyrs under altar want earthly vindication
Heb 12:1 - we are surrounded by a cloud of witnesses
Lk 16:19-30 - departed rich man intercedes for brothers
Rev 20:4 - saw the souls of those who had been beheaded
Wis 3:1-6 - the souls of the just are in the hand of God
2Macc 15:7-16 - the departed Onias & Jeremiah pray for the Jews
The Bible says that Jesus’ blood has cleansed us from all sins and you believe that you still have to go to Purgatory to take care of those “lesser sins” (as though the Bible made a disctinction) that Jesus missed.
Mt 5:48 - be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect
Heb 12:14 - strive for that holiness without which cannot see God
Jam 3:2 - we all fall short in many respects
Rev 21:27 - nothing unclean shall enter heaven
1Jn 5:16-17 - degrees of sins distinguished
Jam 1:14-15 - when sin reaches maturity gives birth to death
2Sam 12:13-14 - David, though forgiven, still punished for his sin
Mt 5:26 - you will not be released until paid last penny
Mt 12:32 - sin against Holy Spirit unforgiven in this age or next
Mt 12:36 - account for every idle word on judgment day
2Macc 12:44-46 - atoned for dead to free them from sin
1Cor 3:15 - suffer loss, but saved as through fire
1Pet 3:18-20; 4:6 - Jesus preached to spirits in prison
2Tim 1:16-18 - Paul prays for dead friend Onesiphorus
1Cor 15:29-30 - Paul mentions people baptizing for the dead

((continue))

The Bible says that Jesus did away with the priestly system of the OC. You still have a priesthood based on it.
He didn’t. He said, he came to fullfill the Law. He himself is the High Priest, Prophet, and King.

Holy Orders
Acts 20:28 - Holy Sprit appointed you overseers, to tend Church
Lk 22:19 - do this in memory of me
Jn 20:22 - As Father sent me, I send you…receive Holy Spirit
Acts 6:6 - the apostles prayed and laid hands on them
Acts 13:3 - they laid hands on them & sent them off
Acts 14:22 - they appointed presbyters in each church
1Tim 4:14 - gift received through laying on of hands of presbyterate
2Tim 1:6 - gift of God you have through imposition of hands
Tit 1:5 - appoint presbyters in every town as I directed you
(also see The Priesthood)
The Bible says that Jesus is our redeemer and mediator. You believe that Mary is “co-redeemer” and “co-mediatrix.”
It’s not been officially declared by the Church that she is. Many Catholics do believe in it. However, I like to note, as Christians, we are all Intercessors and mediators for our fellow Christian.
The Bible says that God is eternally pre-existent. You believe that there was a moment in time where God was born. (which of course, begs the questions, “how could God be born unless He already existed to create Mary” and “If Mary is God’s mother, who is God’s father”)
Wrong again. The Catholic Church believes that God is eternal. We do believe that for men to be saved, God had to become incarnated as Man. So the Holy Spirit overshadow Mary, and she gave birth to Jesus Christ, who is both God and Man. The Word who was in the Beginning became flesh. To deny that Mary is not the Mother of God would be guilty of a heresy known as Nestorianism. Second, Elizabeth called Mary, mother of My Lord. In Hebrew, Lord invokes the very Name of God.

We acknowledge that Mary is Mother of God, the Son. The Second Person of the Trinity. She is not the Mother of God the Father, nor the Holy Spirit. Your theology is very bad.
The BIble says that God alone can forgive sin. You believe that you have men who can forgive your sin.
You are wrong again. Jesus gave men authority to forgive sins. This very clear in John 20:23. Since the Bishops and priest are the successors of the Apostles.

Mt 9:2-8 Son of Man has authority to forgive sins
Jn 20:23 - whose sins you forgive/retain are forgiven/retained
Jn 20:22 - breathed on them, “receive Holy Spirit” [recall Gn 2:7]
2Cor 5:17-20 - given us the ministry of reconciliation
Jam 5:13-15 - confess your sins to one another
Mt 18:18 - whatever you bind & loose on earth, so it is in heaven
1Jn 5:6 - there is sin that is not deadly
The Bible says that that Jesus founded His church on Peter’s confession. You believe that Jesus founded His church on Peter.
The Bible says that Jesus is the chief cornerstone. You say that Peter is the cornerstone…
Jesus in Matthew 16:18 commission Peter. It is Peter’s confession, but you cannot deny the facts.

Jesus said, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar Jona! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My Church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

The passage clearly shows that Jesus change Simon’s name to Peter. This all took place Ceasarea Philippi. If you had not been there. It is a rather rocky area with rocky cliff and peeks. Jesus also said that the Father in heaven has revealed that Peter that Jesus Christ will build His Church. In the Aramaic language the word for Rock is Kepha or Cephas.

If we use the Aramaic word which Jesus spoke the passage would look something like this.

“And I tell you, you are Kepha and on this Kepha I will build My Church.” Peter’s name derives from the Greek word Petros or Petra.

With respect to the Bible, the Church did not write or give us the Bible. …
What the Church did was discern the canon. ie They identified what books were inspired. The question then becomes what is the Church…

The contents of the New Testament had been established by Christians at large well prior to any church council. All the councils did was accept what was already generally accepted. …

Now even while error was entering the visible church, there was no dissension with the New Testament canon. ie No faction, even as the church split, differed on the contents of the New Testament. …
This is not the case with the Old Testament. Even after the Old Testament canon was supposedly determined, there was dispute within the visible church as to its contents. …

Now when the Mormons came along, they asserted a new Scripture.
[/SIGN]

Wow what we must come up with to stay out of the one true visible church. Where is all that in the Bible? All of this invisible and visible stuff. You said that they all agreed on what was scriptural and what was not and that they were ratifying what everyone already believed. Yet the original source’s tell us a different story. The early church held different views on how many books were included in the New Testament. Not all of the communities agreed on what came from the Apostles. All of the lists agree on the four Gospels. In the 170-180’s Muritorian Canon or Fragment accepted the Acts of the Apostles, 13 Epsitles of Paul (excluding Hebrews), Jude, 2 letters of John(not 3), the Apocolypse(Revelation),and the apocolypse of Peter(which was later rejected), and the book of Wisdom.

St Clement of Alexandria included 14 Letters of Paul , Acts, 1 Peter, 1 and 2 John, Jude, Revelation, the Apocolypse of Peter, The preaching Of Peter, the Sheppard Of Hermas, The letter of St.Barnabus, The 1st Letter of Clement the pope of Rome.

St Iraneus in his Book 2 Against Heresies, had 12 Letters of Paul, did not include Hebrews or Philemon, 1 Peter ,1 and 2 John, Revelation, and with some reserve he mentions Hebrews, but includes the Sheperd of Hermas

Tertulian of Carthage had 13 Epistles of Paul, did not include Acts, did include 1 Peter, 1 John, Jude, but not Revelation.

These are the first 4 lists we have.

Origen, Who was the first Scripture Scholar in the Church, working with Hebrew and Greek Translations, accepted Hebrews and Revelation, was the first to accept the letter of James and 2 Peter, also 2 and 3 John, though he mentions they are disputed, and also accepts the Didache and St Barnabas.

Dionysis who became the Patriarch of Alexandria in 231, questioned the book of Revelation but accepted it.

Lucian, who was the head of a scripture school at Antioch rejected the Book of Revelation.

In the East the Book of Revelation was not widely accepted.

Bishop Eusebius of Ceasaria had doubts about James, Jude, 2 Peter, 2 and 3 John, and Revelation but includes them in the list he sends to the Emperor Constatine

St Ceril of Jerusalem and St Gregory Naziensus had 26 books but not Revelation.

Epiphanius of Constantia did Accept Rev.

St. Athenasius the Patriarch of Alexandria, finally accepts 27 books of the New Testament

But St John Chrisistom did not use 2 Peter, 3 John, Jude, and Rev.

The Council at Laodicea in approx 343 also cmae up with a list with the same new test but a slightly diff old test.

St. Jerome had 27 books after he was charged with doing the research and made his report to the Synod of Rome which came up with the same list Cathoilcs use today, even though Jerome himself did not think the OT had 46 Books He only thought 39

The Synod of Rome in 382 and the Synods of Hippo and Carthage finally agreed on the Canon.

It was not until the Emperor Constatine Legalized Christianity that the Church could take a breath and start to put together all of the writings that were being treated as Scripture

He didn’t.
Then why does the Bible say that He did?
Wrong again. The Catholic Church believes that God is eternal.
So then, His mother must also be eternal.
We acknowledge that Mary is Mother of God, the Son. The Second Person of the Trinity. She is not the Mother of God the Father, nor the Holy Spirit. Your theology is very bad.
And your theology amounts to polytheism. I’ll take Biblical theology over your doctrinal trainwreck any day.
You are wrong again. Jesus gave men authority to forgive sins. This very clear in John 20:23. Since the Bishops and priest are the successors of the Apostles.
Actually, this passage is referring to preaching the Gospel, not to Jesus relinquishing His sole authority to forgive sins.
Hey, that’s pretty good. I’ve never seen so many verses taken out of context to make one prooftext before.
Jesus in Matthew 16:18 commission Peter. It is Peter’s confession, but you cannot deny the facts.
Actually, if you had been honest enough to post the whole passage and not just isolate one verse out of context, you would have seen that the context tells us that it is Peter’s confession, not Peter.

Then why does the Bible say that He did?
Cite the verse that he ended priesthood. Because he didn’t. All Jesus said, I came to fullfill the law not to abolish it.
17 Do not think that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets. I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.
Matthew 5:17
So then, His mother must also be eternal.
That is not taught by the Catholic Church. Like I said, Mary gave birth to Jesus, the Second Person of the Trinity. Yes, Jesus was in the beginning but He did not had flesh. It was not until Gabriel came to Mary and announced to her, that she she will conceived and bear a son, and that the Holy Spirit will overshadow her.

How did the Word became flesh? Jesus became flesh through Mary. Since Jesus is Truly Man, and Truly God, Mary can rightly be called Mother of God.
And your theology amounts to polytheism. I’ll take Biblical theology over your doctrinal trainwreck any day.
Really. A Catholic professes there is Only One God. Truly, I say to you, you don’t know Catholicism.
Actually, this passage is referring to preaching the Gospel, not to Jesus relinquishing His sole authority to forgive sins.
No. Jesus breathed on His Disciples. To them, they have been given the power to forgive sins.
Hey, that’s pretty good. I’ve never seen so many verses taken out of context to make one prooftext before.
They aren’t taken out of context.
Actually, if you had been honest enough to post the whole passage and not just isolate one verse out of context, you would have seen that the context tells us that it is Peter’s confession, not Peter.
Peter’s name comes from the word Petros and Petra which means rock in Greek. The Aramaic word for Rock is Kepha. Peter is often called Kepha by Paul. So Peter is indeed the Rock. As Fr. Corapi once said, Jesus grafted Peter into himself.

Cite the verse that he ended priesthood. Because he didn’t. All Jesus said, I came to fullfill the law not to abolish it.

Matthew 5:17
So, Christ didn’t do away with it, and then you quote one of the verses that tells us He did away with it?

Strange debating tactic you’ve got there.
That is not taught by the Catholic Church.
It may not be, but it is the only logical conclusion. If you’re going to say that Mary is God’s mother, then, assuming God was born, she must have been there when He was born. Since we know that God has always existed, Mary must also have always existed.
Yes, Jesus was in the beginning but He did not had flesh.
So, He was already God when Mary gave birth to Him?
Really. A Catholic professes there is Only One God. Truly, I say to you, you don’t know Catholicism.
Maybe not, but I do know the Bible and what you’re talking about is still polytheism.
No. Jesus breathed on His Disciples. To them, they have been given the power to forgive sins.
(a) where is this found in scripture
(b) why does the Bible say that only God has the power to forgive sin?
They aren’t taken out of context.
Of course they are. I’m leaving in few minutes, but I’ll come back to this and we’ll go through each one of them.
Peter’s name comes from the word Petros and Petra which means rock in Greek. The Aramaic word for Rock is Kepha. Peter is often called Kepha by Paul. So Peter is indeed the Rock. As Fr. Corapi once said, Jesus grafted Peter into himself.
Be that as it may, you still dishonestly chose to post only part of the passage.

So, Christ didn’t do away with it, and then you quote one of the verses that tells us He did away with it?

Strange debating tactic you’ve got there.
You claim Jesus did away with priesthood. The passage clearly states he didn’t. He came to fulfil the law, Not to abolish it. I also look in other parts of the Bible where Jesus and the Apostles talk about the abolishment of the priesthood all together. I found none. So the claim that Jesus abolished the priesthood is wrong.

The Holy Order which we Catholics have as well as Orthodox was handed down to us by Jesus Christ. He comissioned the Twelve Apostles. When the Apostles died, their authority was handed down to bishops.

St. Ignatius of Antioch, a disciple of St. John, is one of them. Also Timothy, a disciple of Paul, as well as others.
It may not be, but it is the only logical conclusion. If you’re going to say that Mary is God’s mother, then, assuming God was born, she must have been there when He was born. Since we know that God has always existed, Mary must also have always existed.
Well you are stating here that is not even professed by the Catholic Church itself. Instead you are straining yourself by trying to find the logic of this. Do you know the history behind the title Mother of God or Theotokos come from?

It is apparent that you don’t. In the year 431 AD, the bishop name Nestorius from Constantinople taught that Jesus has two persons, a human person and a divine person. He also denied Mary the title Mother of God or Theotokos which means God-Bearer. The Council of Ephesus condemned this heresy called Nestorianism and upheld the belief that Mary is the Mother of God, the Second Person of the Trinity.
So, He was already God when Mary gave birth to Him?
Jesus was already God. He was pure spirit. Jesus full incarnation as man didn’t came about until the Holy Spirit overhshadow Mary, and she became pregnant with Child. Hence, the Word became Flesh. Paul said, that Jesus was born of a Woman.
Maybe not, but I do know the Bible and what you’re talking about is still polytheism.
The Catholic Church does not believe nor has it ever profess that Mary is a God. She is a creature, a created being. She is the Mother of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

(
a) where is this found in scripture
(b) why does the Bible say that only God has the power to forgive sin?
John 20:23:

Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you." And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven, if you retain the sins of any they are retain.”

Jesus send his Apostle to the world to preach the Gospel. He also give authority them the authority to forgive sins.
Of course they are. I’m leaving in few minutes, but I’ll come back to this and we’ll go through each one of them.
Be that as it may, you still dishonestly chose to post only part of the passage.
I am not being dishonest. If you want to take a look at Matthew 16:18. I shall give you the full context.

This is after Peter said that you are the Christ, Son of the Living God to Jesus.

And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Son of Bar Jona!” For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bound on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loose in heaven."

In the passage which I provide, the Father in heaven has revealed to Peter, that the Son will build His Church upon him, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it. Jesus also gave Peter the keys of the kingdom of heaven.

We both know Jesus spoke Aramaic. In the Aramaic language the word for Rock means Kepha. So if the word kepha is used instead of Rock it would read something like this.

“And I tell you, you are Kepha and upon this kepha I will build my church.”

Kepha or Cephas is often address in the Bible as name of Peter.

The Bible says that Jesus’ blood has cleansed us from all sins and you believe that you still have to go to Purgatory to take care of those “lesser sins” (as though the Bible made a disctinction) that Jesus missed.*

****With respect to the Bible’s not making a distinction between venial, or “non-deadly” and mortal or “deadly” sin, will someone please give Mr brosam this verse ( he put me on ignore) ? 1 Jn 5:16

"He that knoweth his brother to sin a sin which is not to death****, let him ask, and life shall be given to him…There is a sin unto death: for that I say not that any man ask." ( I use Douay- Rheims, and have added the emphasis)

Also, my understanding of Purgatory is not to “take care of lesser sins”, but to receive purification so that we may enter heaven in a state of purity. Jesus said “Blessed are the clean of heart: for they shall see God”. I assume that the unclean will not see God. Please correct me if I am mistaken. :o

I’m always pondering this question to.

I don’t understand why Protestants trust the authority of the Church in the the matter of which books were to be included in the bible and believe the Holy Spirit was with them then but then believe that the Holy Spirit left them?

Either the Church was infallible when deciding the books or they weren’t. If the Church wasn’t infallible when deciding which books, then why trust the bible so much? And why trust they correctly chose the 27 New Testament books but were wrong with the Old?

The way I see it, if the Church is infallible in regards to the bible, then it’s infallible in ALL areas. If the Church is not infallible in even ONE thing, then it’s not infallible where the bible is concerned. That means the bible COULD be missing a book with some VERY important details we should know.

Since they believe the Church is not infallible then why do Protestants have so much faith and trust in a book that came out of the “fallible” CATHOLIC Church?

Since the Holy Spirit is with each individual in interpreting the bible correctly and keeping them from error, why don’t they just collect all the writings the Church went through and let the Holy Spirit speak to them which writings are accurate? Better not give them ideas!

Sorry, I can go on and on with this but I’ll stop now…:banghead:
