By all means, keep the party going!
I will! Just one more answer (again…:p) and all will be revealed. 🙂

For the record, I’m pleasantly surprised at the (name removed by moderator)ut. And people say that Catholics are ignorant of Scripture…😉

Sorry to break my word and spoil it folks, but I’ll give the answer right now:

And much livestock had been to the sons of Reuben and to the sons of Gad, very many; and they saw the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead - and behold, the place was a place for livestock; and the sons of Gad, and the sons of Reube came in and spoke to Moses and to Eleazar the priest and to the leaders of the congregation, saying, “Ataroth, and Dibon, and Jazer, and Nimrah, and Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Shebam, and Nebo, and Beon - the land which Yhwh had struck before the congregation of Israel is a land for livestock, and your servants have livestock.” And they said, “If we have found favor in your eyes, let this land be given to your servants for a possession. Cause us not to pass over the Jordan!
And Moses said to the sons of Gad and to the sons of Reuben, “Shall your brethren go in to the battle, and you - shall you sit here? And why do you discourage the heart of the sons of Israel from passing over to the land which Yhwh had given them? Thus your fathers did in my sending them from Kadesh-Barnea to see the land. And they went up to the valley of Eshcol, and saw the land, and discouraged the heart of the sons of Israel so as not to go in to the land which Yhwh had given them; and the nose of Yhwh burned in that day, and He swore, saying, 'If they see - the men who are coming up out of Egypt from a son of twenty years**+** and above - the ground which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob - for they have not been fully after me, except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, and Joshua son of Nun, for they have been fully after Yhwh.’ And the nose of Yhwh burned aganst Israel, and He made them to wander in the wilderness forty years, until the consumption of all the generation that had done the evil in the eyes of Yhwh.
And behold! You have risen in the place of your fathers, an increase of men - sinners, to add yet to the burning of the nose of Yhwh toward Israel; when you turn back from after Him, then He will once again leave him [Israel] in the wilderness, and you will destroy all this people.*”
  • Numbers 32:1-15
And Yhwh said, “I have forgiven according to your word. Yet indeed, by my life - and it shall be filled - all the earth - with the glory of Yhwh. For all the men who are seeing my glory and my signs which I have done in Egypt and in the wilderness, and test me these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice: if they see the land**** which I have sworn to their fathers - none of those spurning me shall see it.”
And my servant Caleb - because there has been another spirit with him, and he is fully after me, I shall bring him in to the land which he entered, and his seed shall possess it.* (Now the Amalekite and the Canaanite are dwelling in the valley.) Tomorrow turn and journey into the wilderness by the way of the Reed Sea."
And Yhwh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying, “Until when this evil congregation who are complaining against me? The complaints of the sons of Israel, which they are complaining against me, I have heard. Say to them, ‘By my life’ - a word of Yhwh - 'as you have spoken in my ears, so will I do to you! In this wilderness shall your corpses fall, even all your numbered ones, to all your number, from a son of twenty years*+** and above, who have complained against me. You - you shall come not in to the land which I have lifted up my hand to cause you to settle in, save Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun. And as to your children, whom you have said would become plunder: I will bring them in, and they shall know the land which you have refused. And as to you: your corpses shall fall in this wilderness, and your sons shall be shepherds in the wilderness forty years, and bear up your harlotry until your corpses are consumed in the wilderness. According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, forty days - a day for a year, a day for a year - you shall bear up your iniquities forty years, and you shall know my rejection.*’
I, Yhwh, I have spoken. If I do not this***** to all this evil congregation who are gathering together against me - in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.”
And the men whom Moses had sent to spy the land - and they turned back and made all the congregation complain against him by bringing out a slander about the land, even the men bringing out an evil slander about the land - died of the plague before Yhwh. But Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, have lived - of those men who went to spy out the land.’"
  • Numbers 14:20-38
+ 'A son of so-and-so years’: Idiom for ‘so-and-so years old’.
  • If…’: These elliptical sentences are the normal way to express a negative oath for Hebrew (i.e. something like “May thus happen to me if so-and-so happens”). The sense is close to “I shall surely…” or “I shall indeed…” (in the case of Numbers 32: "Surely none of the men that came up out of Egypt…shall see the land")
So yep, y’all have got it right! 🙂 Again, it’s really pleasing to see that nobody was misled by Mr. DeMille’s compressed version where the Golden Calf incident was the immediate cause of the forty-year wandering. 😛

A slight modification of TEH RULZ: THREE posters, and should there be less than three posters, TWELVE hours or more.

Two questions at once.

6.) Who was the priest who saved king Joash from Athaliah’s slaughter of the royal children?

A.) Jehoiada
B.) Zadok
C.) Jonathan
D.) Annas
E.) Eli
F.) Abihu

7.) Where in the New Testament (the Gospels, to be more exact) does the toponym Nazara appear? Please provide the exact passages.

Four hints for number 7: (1) it’s a difficult question; and (2) don’t expect it to show up in regular Bibles; (3) Nazara is a variant of Nazareth; and (4) did I mention how difficult it is?

Unless I am mistaken, in the ancient Greek manuscripts, the specific usage of the term “Nazara” for the place name of Nazareth is found in only two places in the gospels:

Matthew 4:13
…and leaving Nazareth he went and dwelt in Caper’na-um by the sea, in the territory of Zeb’ulun and Naph’tali,

Luke 4:16
And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up; and he went to the synagogue, as his custom was, on the sabbath day.

I am on a road trip so I am far away from my Greek lexicon to double-check, but I’ll go ahead and submit this as my answer (based on the limited resources I have access to). For the record, I did not know this off the top of my head, so it was, indeed, a very challenging question!

Correct! 👍
Now, extra question for you, since you answered it first: where in the Gospels does the form Nazaret (tau instead of theta) appear?

Who was the first Apostle to die?

Hats off to Rocks_91 for being the first to correctly answer this question. Judas Iscariot was, indeed, the first of the Apostles to die. According to the Bible, Judas committed suicide before Jesus was crucified.

I have been using this trivia question for years, and the first answer people present is usually incorrect. Naturally, this is understandable and to be expected. For example…
My wife got the right answer right off the bat, I thought I was being clever and was going to confuse her a bit. That’ll show me. Great trick question though, I’ll test it out on some more friends 🙂

Once again, I am away from my main Greek reference materials, but based on what I do have access to I will say that the only appearance in the gospels of the Nazaret variation (in the original Greek) is:

Mark 1:9
In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.

It’s nice to know that your wife is not so easily thrown off. Nevertheless, based on my past experiences I expect that there will be others who will answer with a notably lesser degree of accuracy.

Two posters more for question 6. Who wants to answer?

You have me wondering still who the second apostle to die is, bleh 😛

James son of Zebedee (Acts 12:1-2)?

Oddly enough, a medieval pilgrim’s hymn dedicated to St. James the Greater in his shrine at Compostela (Dum pater familias) proclaims him as “primus ex apostolis, martyr Hierosolymis.” I guess Judas doesn’t count as an Apostle then according to the composer/s of this song. :hmmm:

Oh yes, and one more person to go.

Jehoiada it is indeed!

Moving on:

9.) What is the judge Shamgar son of Anath famed for?

Shamgar killed 600 Philistines with an oxgoad, and saved Israel 🙂

(Though I admit I cheated 😊)

9.) What is the judge Shamgar son of Anath famed for?
I’ll also go with djd83’s answer. Very little is recorded about Shamgar in the Bible. Generally speaking, he is known to have lead battles against Philistine incursions. From what I can discern, his biggest claim to fame (in terms of what is recorded) is the slaying of 600 Philistines with an ox goad, as djd83 pointed out.

In case anyone is curious, an ox goad is basically a very long pointed stick used by a ploughman to nudge and direct oxen. In the below picture, the ploughman in the center is wielding an ox goad.

(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

Since twelve hours has elapsed, I’ll reveal the correct answer:

After him was Shamgar the son of Anath, who killed 600 of the Philistines with an oxgoad, and he also saved Israel.
  • Judges 3:31
One fun fact about Shamgar: the word translated as ‘oxgoad’ is actually an hapax legomenon, and thus its precise meaning is not exactly known (the ‘oxgoad’ rendering is from the Septuagint).

Shamgar is also mentioned in the Song of Deborah (Judges 5:6):

In the days of Shamgar, son of Anath, in the days of Jael, the highways were abandoned, and travelers kept to the byways.

I know that many Bible quizzes usually just limit themselves to the books, personages, events, and contents thereof. But we’re going to up the ante here and include stuff not usually included in your ol’ Bible quiz. 😉

What is the generally undisputed earliest surviving record of a New Testament text?

A.) Papyrus 39 (P. Oxy. 1780)
B.) Papyrus 52 (John Rylands University Library, Gr. P. 457)
C.) Papyrus 66 (P. Bodmer II)
D.) Papyrus 1 (P. Oxy. 2)
