Bible quotes defending Catholicism?

Does anyone have any specific biblical references which would be helpful to defend Catholicism to someone who was raised Catholic, had all the Catholic Sacraments, but now has switched to a non-denominational, born-again- type Christian church? Their church seems to be very big on scripture references and bible study. Thanks so much!
Two books by Dave Armstrong will help:

The Catholic Verses
A Biblical Defense of Catholicism

Also, you might check out:

Scroll down to the bottom where Salza has listed a bunch of topics.

Be warned: Salza has some weird ideas about geocentrism and sedevacantism that you will want to ignore, but his listing of verses useful in explaining Catholic doctrine is quite good.

One good source is to find the information on how we got the bible and how it was put together. Then you would be talking about all Catholic things. IMHO.
Interesting perspective to suggest. Thanks very much, mdcpensive. God bless you for helping.

Salza has provided arguments against sedevacantists, and belief in geocentrism is ok

Technically speaking, all the verses are “Catholic” verses. The New Testament was written by, for, and about Catholics. The New Testament is a collection of documents collected, preserved, promulgated and canonized by the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church bound these 27 documents together with the Septuagint to form what is now called the “Bible”. They don’t realize that book they use to whack us on the head is our book.

Catholics added the verse numbers and the chapter numbers to make it easier to locate things in the text, which up until that time, was not sectioned like this. 😃

What is your goal with these people? Do you intend to show them that flight to the “non-denominational” church is not right?
Good points, guanophore. I had read somewhere that some other non-Catholic Christians use a different version of the bible than most Catholics, so I don’t know if this particular person does. I would guess probably.

My goal is to gradually and lovingly attempt to show them the important differences between Catholicism that they have left behind and their born-again church because they are a close family member that I care for deeply. I feel like they seem to choose to concentrate on the scripture verses that make them feel most comfortable in the new church.

Thanks for your (name removed by moderator)ut, and God bless.

By defending Catholicism, do you mean that Faith and Set of Beliefs handed down from Christ to His Apostles and from them down through His Church (The Catholic Church)?
If so, the answer is a difinitive Yes! For which specific beliefs would he like proof?

How about this

The Church has been Catholic from the 1st century. The English word Catholic is a transliteration of the Greek katholikos which is a compound word from kata, which means according to, and holos, which means whole. catholic.com/tracts/what-catholic-means

So one THEN can ask, where does kata holos appear in scripture and particularly kata holos ekklesia ?

Acts 9:31 the church throughout all ἐκκλησία,καθ’,ὅλης ,τῆς ,Judea and Galilee and Sama’ria…" = the Kataholos Church.

Jesus established one Church. It’s the Catholic Church. Apart from which there is no salvation. If you want those passages as well, just say so 🙂
Thanks very much for the important insight, steve b. God’s blessings always to you!

Thanks very much, Randy Carson, for taking the time to give the recommendations. Also appreciate the warning! God’s blessings to you.

Hi, Ignatius. Yes, I’m referring to our wonderful (and the original!) Catholic Church which this person has left in favor of a born-again-type non-denominational Christian church. They’re not asking for proof (and seem very happy and settled at their new church, unfortunately), but I’m hoping and praying to lovingly provide biblical quotes to help explain what they don’t seem to understand regarding what they’ve so easily left behind in Catholicism (and the difference between it and where they are now).

I would use Patrick Madrid’s Where is That in the Bible?. He recommends using the RSV when talking to non-Catholics since it is generally accepted by most denominations. You can get a good RSV from Ignatius Press that’s a perfect carry size.
I also have a copy of The Catholic Answer Bible. This gives the Biblical references to the major teachings of the Catholic Church and objections that many non-Catholics have to the Catholic Faith. The translation is NAB.

Ah, thanks very much DebChris. Those sound like very useful recommendations. God’s blessings always.
