My husband and I have a habit of praying and talking each night before bed; we’d like to add reading the Bible together during that time but are unsure of a plan.

We could start at Matthew and read thru the New Testament, we could start at Genesis, we could search for topics, we could open at random…

I’ve done quite a few formal Bible studies on various books so am more drawn to a plan that makes sure we eventually complete the whole Bible. DH is more inclined to read on a specific topic but isn’t sure how to decide on topics.

We would appreciate any insight you have to offer.

I like CS Lewis’ version of Mere Christianity study book. Leather bound and super nice.

I’ve heard Catholic Mommy bloggers rave about this

I haven’t tried it yet, but I’m going to start in January. I’m super excited.

If you are looking for some real meat to tackle together I’d suggest this book from Scott Hahn and getting his lectures that go with it. My friend downloaded them for free from his website years ago. It was an amazing study.

The Catholic Youth Bible has 8 different Bible reading programs. 6 are thematic.

Gospels are always a great place to start.

Another option is to read through the historical books of the Bible - Genesis to the Church - This will give you an chronological walk through salvation history and you will only need to read 14 books. This a 90 day reading plan for this approach but you can stretch this out over 6 mos or a year.

Thank you for all of the great options!

We decided to just start with Matthew last night as, well, once you commit to reading the Bible it feels wrong to wait to find the “perfect plan” 🤣 We decided if we found a plan/topic/devotional that we felt strongly we wanted to do we’d put a bookmark where we left off, could do “the course” and then start back up again until we found the next thing. It feels like a good compromise.

@Xanthippe_Voorhees I think you found the perfect Christmas gift for my DH! He’s been wanting to re-read Mere Christianity again (it’s been floating about the house for weeks) but other readings have been more pressing. I think he would get a lot of value out of a co-reading/writing project. Thank you!

Matthew is a great gospel. As you read it keep in mind that he is writing to Jews to show them that Jesus is the messiah. There are a ton of Old Testament references. It would not be a bad idea to have a good Catholic commentary on hand to help identify them.

Thank you, we are using the NABRE Personal Study Bible which includes a significant amount of footnotes which have explanations as well as references to the Old Testament scriptures. If half the page is scripture the other half is footnotes and each book also has a good amount of explanation, history, and context.

That said, if you have any commentaries you could recommend I’m open to learning more. I came to Catholicism through RCIA and there is a TON I just don’t know about (such as I had to google what a Catholic commentary was… 😊 )

Is this the one you have? If so it will give you some good additional information.

Thank you, yes, the first link is the Bible we have been using.

The series you linked to is what came up in my searching; it looked interesting. Now I have something to ask for on my Christmas list, too. 😉

Thank you for taking the time to answer.

What I like about the catholic commentary series is that they give a couple verses at a time then the commentary. So you get commentary on the whole book of the Bible not just selected verses like the footnotes do.

It started with with walking after dinner, then deeper talking then prayer. The prayer part is still a little awkward sometimes but it gets easier each time.

One of my favorite books to read is Genesis, especially the story of Joseph and his brothers.

Really shows the world then is not too much different from the world now.
