I am sure this is the wrong forum, and I apologize for that, but I am not sure where the best place is to ask this question and I would like to direct the question to those in this forum.

I would like to purchase two new Catholic Bibles. I would like a study Bible with commentary and another standard version. Does anyone have any recommendations for me? Thanks in advance!

I like the Douay-Rheims with commentary by Fr. Geo. Haydock. The commentary is traditional Catholic.

To sit and read I have the Jerusalem bible from 1966 which I like a lot. It too has wonderful foot notes and a lot of cross references. You can probably get one of these used on the net. They are not in print any more, unfortunately.

I think on this site a lot of people would recommend the RSV-CE. I don’t care too much for this because it is lacking in foot notes.
Just my opinion.

Here’s an EWTN article on Bibles and commentaries.

There’s a free commentary based on the Douay-Rheims version that is very well organized called the Haydock Bible Commentary online you can use.

If you have like $400+ to spare, I recommend the Navarre Bible Commentary series, which is based off the Revised Standard Version-Catholic Edition (RSV-CE). See the products for the full OT and NT sets in the link. This one is recommended by Father Corapi.

Another great free online sources is maintained by one of our fellow forum members here and you can search early Church comments on any particular verse. His website is Litterals Christian Library.

There is also a good series called the Ignatius Study Bible by Hahn and Mitch. I don’t know that there’s a complete set yet, but samples I’ve seen online have been very good.

My Bible of choice is the RSV-CE which leans more literal but is easier to read than some of the old English translations like the KJV or Douay-Rheims. The one used at mass is the New American Bible (NAB) and you hear pros and cons about that. However, I consult numerous translations usually because there is no perfect translation. Sites like Biblegateway.com or NETBible.org list many translations side by side (although those sites are hard to get Catholic translations from).

Hope that helps! :o

The RSV is also the one used in the Eng translation of the CCC and other documents…

one does not need to pay $400!!! many ways to do the Navarre…one can start off with under $20! and even get the expanded ed of the NT for $79 and it is well worth it…

Thank you all!

If I were to purchase the complete Navarre NT set, which would you recommend? The 12 paper back or the HB set? It seems like there is more information in the paperback set?

Ok here goes.

The 12 vol paperback are basically the SAME as the HB set (there used to be a difference but not really anymore…the Latin was put back in)

(the 12 of course are easier to carry around…one at a time that is…)

The New Expanded ed of the NT is different than the others though some things are the same or similar --after all they are covering the same ground…

so my recommendation is if you want for the price of the nt paper back …you can get the HB set and the the Expanded ED together… or you can start with one and see if you want the other as well later…

and do try the other one i recommended. it takes a different approach than the Navarre so they go very well together…even though there are only 4 so far.

Thank you for your time. I think I will get the HB set and the Expanded ED as you suggested.

it is a new work and is different…but it does cover the same ground.

but i love both! I will be using the expanded …and then remember something that was in the standard ed and go read it…and I will be reading the new one and find it is different…different sources like the first 2 ency of Pope Benedict…even a bit different approach.

I am partial to the King James translation because of its beautiful poetic language.
You just have to be careful to get one that includes the Deuterocanonical books.
They will not be in the proper order; they will be in a separate section called “Apocrypha,”
but that is a small inconvenience considering the magnificent language.

I recommend the RSV-CE as a good Bible. I am not sure if the 2nd edition is any better than the 1st edition though. That said, I also recommend the New Catholic Answers Bible in the Librosario edition. Here’s an image of it and a link to it:

And yes, the above Bible is genuine leather. 👍 Just click on the image to go to the Amazon product page. 🙂

don’t know from your description what you want, but what I use most often is the NAB Catholic Bible personal study edition (Oxford Press) the big hardcover with green or blue cover. Then I have the pocket size Ignatius RSV-CE, the one with the zippered leather cover for travel, chapel etc. (although soon I will have to find a large type edition)

Or you can get the conventional New Catholic Answer Bible at amazon.com/New-Catholic-Answer-Bible-American/dp/1592761402

My wife bought it for me and I LOVE it. The apologetic notes in it are outstanding (and touches on all the issues you’ll need to know), and has Scripture plus CCC references. It’s the NAB translation, so as someone said there’s pro’s and con’s with that. But it’s very convenient to have those notes.

I see some people have recommended the NAB. If you are looking at coming into the Church then you might want to stay away from it.

You should look into the new Ignatius Catholic Study Bible New Testament coming out next month from Ignatius Press. It will explain the Bible to you in a much more Catholic way than the NAB would ever do.

Ignatius Catholic Study Bible - Paperback

Navarre and Haydock are nice.

On my blog I reviewed a few new Bibles that came out from St. Benedict Press. Here are the links:
