Has anybody been following this History Channel series? I’m watching the current episode with my mother (she seems to be very interested in it), but I have mixed opinions about it. Any opinions will be welcome.

Thanks and God bless.

I’m in Mexico and don’t actually own a TV. Even when I did, I really didn’t watch it.

I’ve seen something in Spanish on some Bible secrets revealed, though, through NetFlix.

Which ones are you on, now?

I’ve only seen the first episode, but have the rest recorded. While I was watching the first show, my wife asked me why I was even watching it, because I kept complaining and countering things that were said in the show. I guess I seemed a little bit agitated, lol. I can’t even remember any of the things I was griping about now, hehe.

Part of the problem with these shows is that they give information that is speculative at best and downright false at worst.

I watch them because I want to be able to answer questions our parishioners may have about what they saw and how it is different from what we are teaching.

Just bear in mind that while History Channel has many good programs that does not apply when it comes to religious ones. History Channel is anti-Christian in general and anti-Catholic in particular.

Agreed. I’ve noticed a tendency during some of their shows to refer to “the Christian Bible” in a way that considers it a supplemental source to the Gnostic Gospel that they are focusing on as a primary source of their information. It always sounds of disdain to me when they say, “The Christian Bible says…”

Why do I watch it, if I disagree so much?
  1. Because I want to know what is out there.
  2. Because it keeps me thinking about my faith, not just believing uncritically.
  3. Because I still hope that they might have changed.
In general, I find these shows to be anti-Christian, and anti-Catholic in particular. They love to speculate, to raise Gnostic texts to a level with Christian texts, and to adapt a very literal reading of the text to show how inaccurate and contradictory it is.

But it does remind me of other details.

For example, the show on the Life of Jesus makes a big thing about the census that supposedly requires Jesus to be born in Bethlehem. They complain that only two Gospels (Matthew and Luke) even mention Jesus being born in Bethlehem of a virgin (Mary), and that such an important fact should have been more widely reported. However, the Census is mentioned only in Luke–if you read Matthew, you get more the idea that Joseph was from Bethlehem, and only moved out (to Egypt, and then to Nazareth in Galilee) because of the danger from the Herodian kinglets (Herod and Archelaus).
