Hi,

I went through RCIA last year and was confirmed and baptized. Now I’m going through it as a sponsor and the girl that I am sponsoring was never raised in a household that had anything to do with the Christianity. Now that we are going over certain things our director will bring up things in the Bible and refer to Bible stories that the candidate knows nothing about. I was talking to her and she really has no knowledge on things that we as Christians would consider conman knowledge. At times she says she feels overwhelmed and I am doing my best to try and find a source that might sum a lot of theses stories up. I was hoping that I could find something for her to read now and then later when she has more time she can go back and read the real thing out of the Bible.

So if anyone knows of any books or websites that sum up bible stories that would be great.

Thanks

Jesuit Fr. Kenneth Baker has written a book entitled Inside the Bible, subtitled: An introduction to each book of the bible. It covers all 73 books of the canon and explains them by giving that book’s place in the bible, its date written and author (if known), its theme, a summary, the theology in it, as well as a brief outline and reflection from one of the prominent quotes within it. I use mine frequently, and can highly recommend it. It is just an intro and is not going to lose someone in complexity. Each book of the bible is covered in 3-5 pages, to give you an idea.

I see also that Professor of Theology at Boston University, Dr. Peter Kreeft, has written a similar book. I do not have it, but he is a highly regarded Catholic writer and theologian.

Christ’s peace be with you.

You also might want to take a minute and mention to whoever is teaching that not everyone knows all of the stories that are brought up and they might want to offer a quick summary of the story. It can be easy for those of us who are quite familiar with all the stories and terms and everything to forget that not everyone is. 😃
