Let people say what they think and don’t be afraid if some Catholics like BSF.
The objections to BSF that have been raised in this thread are legitimate and consistent with the Catholic Faith. They have not been based on ‘fear’…but rather concern for fellow Catholics potentially going astray. Characterizing them as ‘fear’ (and this has been done by multiple posters) seems like an attempt to stifle the Catholic viewpoint…and this is, after all, a Catholic forum.

Noone has tried to stifle the CC or anyones beliefs for crying out loud are you afraid of someone elses viewpoint. I am confident in my relationship with God you never could do that in a hundred years no matter what you did or said!
It is a Catholic but the last I checked all are welcome to view their views.👍

The posts have been most informative for me and my questions. I myself would join BSF if that is all that I could do. So in a sense I am not downplaying it except for the fact that it does not teach the FULL deposit of faith that Christ passed down. I know BSF has it’s good points and is worthwhile to some, but it is not the only option and for someone wanting full knowledge it is not the best. I also know that some Catholic ones can really suck and it is just not “Catholic” that makes it good. It is the presentation of our salvation history from the point of view of Christ and the Church.

I was currious as to why some chose BSF over overs and what their reasoning was and what they taught. Maybe it was partly the friendships that developed? My thought still is that I would not want to unlearn something to learn what I should of in the beginning.

Has BSF formed your heart into conformity with the Catholic Church or led you to think it is all just you and Jesus and you can take what teachings of the Catholic Church you like and pitch the rest?

You have posted pro birth control and pro sterilization on other threads, so, it makes one wonder if you stop filling your heart with non-Catholic teaching and begin to feast on the banquet of taching Holy Mother Church provides - will you then be transformed?

Jesus has conformed my heart with His love to me. I am already transformed, are you:shrug:

I attended BSF for 2 years. I finally realized that I was becoming more and more
frustrated by the non-catholic “undertones”. I was answering some questions by
first explaining the bias in the questions. Of course, I was not allowed to voice my
statements. I found that other Catholics in the group (when we would talk away from
BSF) did not “catch” the misinformation. So it is possible for some to be misled–
right out of the Church. We had a Catholic Bible Study led by a Catholic woman.
She began attending BSF and 2.5 years later she started inserting views in the
Catholic bible study that were “off”. Sure enough, the pastor spoke to her and found
out that she was attending Baptist services and that her daughter had converted
to that faith and that she was considering doing the same. She did. Her husband
and other children remained Catholic, but it was very hard on all…
So I have since warned friends who were thinking of going to BSF. Some have
joined and seem okay, but they have been forewarned. Others joined the Catholic
bible studies even though not as convenient. Some joined but dropped after a few
months.
Many years ago, we did not have choices, now we do. I would search out Catholic
alternatives, as others have mentioned specifically or bite the bullet and start one
to fit your schedule based on the course you like best. (Some are more expensive,
but one poster mentioned a free one.)
Our faith is a gift, but we do have to guard it and I did not like even small misrepresentations made about it.
If the OP felt what she did after one meeting, she would probably feel as I did and
be frustrated after a time.

Jazzno, it is wonderful that you are learning about being closer to Christ. That is part of our mission here on earth, to always come closer. The problem I have with BSF is that they intentionally exclude the most intimate way of coming closer to Christ which is through the Eucharist. This is the summit of our belief as Catholics. To exclude something like this is hard to fathom when they say the BSF format is so good. Can you tell us what BSF teaches that is greater than learning about this??? This question is not posed to be argumentative, but as an example of importance can be ignored that is a source of graces necessary for our salvation.

As a member of the Body of Christ by Baptism, it is wonderful to lead people to Christ, but what better way to lead them than to His real presence.

I agree 100% with you mdcpensive1. Every aspect of Mass has a very specific meaning to it and all of it is designed to bring one closer to God. The Catholic faith has so much richness in it that no other church has and as far as I can see cannot offer to any Christian. I don’t mean that to be offensive but since I am Catholic only 5 years now that is the way I see it. God Bless

I think everyone’s kind of piling onto mdcpensive1 here…not that he or she can’t handle it. The original post, from a Catholic considering BSF, was to ask for thoughts from other Catholics regarding attendance in this program. mdcpensive1 is providing those thoughts.

The bottom line is if you are being fed as a Catholic at BSF, great. However, the fact is that non-Catholic (perhaps even anti-Catholic) doctrine is presented on a regular basis…almost each and every week. This has been discussed and well established in prior posts on this thread.

Therefore, as a Catholic, you will have to be ever vigilant about this if you choose to attend BSF.

I am a late comer to this thread but have been following it from the beginning. Many good points have already been made. More important, IMHO, that any anti or non-Catholic undertones or themes is what is missing. BSF, nor any non-Catholic Bible study, is going to be missing some essential elements. A good Bible study should always be able to link the Scripture with the CCC and with living out the Sacramental life of the Church. Without those elements, you are just studying the words in the Bible, not doing an actual Scripture study. Studying the words is fine and many Bible scholars must do this, especially when doing translation work, but for the vast majority of lay Catholics, this is an anemic and incomplete way to look at Scripture.
I was invited to join a Bible Study this fall through BSF International. I went to the informational meeting this morning at a local Lutheran church. Being Catholic I felt like a fish out of water. They talked about how it is was a non denominational study and how it is a study of what the bible says to you as an individual. The whole thing didn’t sit well with me. Can anyone tell me their thoughts?

SahmomMN, if you haven’t been scared away already :), trust your instincts. Unless you are a trained apologist as kage_ar suggested or are doing research on how non-Catholics view the Bible, this type of Bible study really doesn’t offer anything for a Catholic. As someone mentioned, we are so lucky to live in this time with so many great Catholic Bible studies available. Good luck in your endeavor!

One who is being transformed by Christ follows all that the Church teaches.

Do you?
You know what I am happy for you that you think you are perfect and it does not personally matter to me in your beliefs. I don’t know your heart as you do not know mine only God does and for that I am thankful for. I know that I found my way back to God thru BSF and if that is hard for you to understand so be it. I anyone is uncomfortable with it by all means don’t you you have that choice. As for me I am happy I went and that settles it. My relationship with Jesus is between me and God not you or anyone else. You can read anything you would like into that. So judge me call me whatever it is all right with me.👍

Simple question, you keep dodging it.

Has BSF led you to a deeper acceptance of the teachings of the Catholic Church or not?

My answer is YES. That is why I came back to the CC as a matter of fact dear heart. That was over 25 years ago. So be my guest and do a little more judging. Just goes to prove people don’t always know all the answers.👋

Tweety mom has written:

I don’t know if you really meant it but this quote of yours is something that I see as a danger of BSF. Many non-Catholics do say that their relationship is between Jesus and them and nothing else. The Catholic view is that we relate to Christ through His Church, by His sacraments, especially through His Body which we all are a part of. That is the power of the Church and the life in the Spirit. When we go to Mass there is strength there because we are all the parts that make it up. When we don’t go to Mass parts of the Body is missing which makes the Church weaker. However, I know that you do go to Mass and I am just saying this to show that it is not just all about the bible or a relationship with ONE being.

We are all trying to learn about God and what He wants of us to do His will. We have a natural reason to use to discover certain things about Him from what is natural. We have a spiritual knowledge which was given us by Christ through His apostles as our deposit of faith. We have greater understanding of this faith through the Holy Spirit as the HS works through the Magesterium for our benefit.

Any non-denominational group many times only takes words of the bible to come to their own interpretations which can miss the analogies that were meant for us to know to come to greater knowledge of Christ. This is because they don’t use the mind of the Church and it’s experience of over two thousand years. Contemporary explainations come into being that have never been taught before like OSAS, the prosperity gospel, no need for baptism, Eucharist as only a sign, no more priesthood, no visible Church, no authority from Christ, etc. I see BSF as not as a detriment but as a non-contributor in important topics which may dull the faith of Catholics. BSF can be good for some but not fulfilling. This is like the Old Covenant that only pointed to the realities that were to come that was Jesus Christ in the New Covenant. It was good but not the best.

Keep up the faith and your prayer life.

Please see the post in Moral Theology about “judging”.

We are called to judge actions and fraternal correction is part of the Faith.

Good for you and if you don’t know a persons heart how can you judge? I am very thankful for BSF It brought to to my knees to accept Jesus as my Savior. Also as I learned the scriptures it brought me home to the Church of my childhood. So I will also be gratiful for BSF, and Jesus. I am glad for you in what ever way you came to know Jesus as your personal Savior. No judging from me:thumbsup:

I believe that God’s enemy wrings his hands with glee when hearing God’s children tear each other apart with discussions that lead us from Christ.

Corki says: “A good Bible study should always be able to link the Scripture with the CCC and with living out the Sacramental life of the Church. Without those elements, you are just studying the words in the Bible, not doing an actual Scripture study.”

Absolutely untrue! I am doing a Catholic Bible Study of John with the CCC right now, and I have studied John with BSF (and am re-doing the BSF version in injunction with the Catholic one). Actually, I will be specific, which so many of you critics have failed to be. It is “Come and See” Catholic Bible Study by Fr. Ponessa & Laurie Manhardt. The Catholic one is only one facet to the richness of Christ’s words in John, and I think the authors would agree. In this study the CCC does focus on the Sacraments, and many “new” Catholics have remarked on how valuable this is to them. Saying that any other study, such as BSF or any Catholic study that does not link the CCC, is “just studying the words in the Bible” precludes any relationship with the Holy Spirit! This is very narrow and judgmental thinking.

Again, posters, please provide some specifics with your arguments, or start to question your motives in your criticisms: Are you leading others from Christ? Are you doing the work of God’s enemy?

Specifics! What “good Catholic studies”? Justify your comments! Why are they more insightful than BSF? Where do I get these studies? Don’t tell me what your neighbor-friend-Catholic woman-daughter-in-law experienced! Have you been in BSF yourself?

TexCatholic4JMJ says: “I found that other Catholics in the group (when we would talk away from BSF) did not “catch” the misinformation. So it is possible for some to be misled–right out of the Church.”

And I can tell you that I have been in Catholic studies that worship and adore Mary, and continue to do so when they are called on it.

I disagree that this has been “well established”. In my 13 years with BSF I have heard little doctrine that disagrees with Catholicism. Mostly, it has to do with the word “alone” added by Martin Luther. Maybe I am blessed to have the teaching leaders I have had, or maybe I have warned them before hand. And like I have said all the attacks in BSF on the Catholic Church have come from former Catholics.

kage_ar asks: “Simple question, you keep dodging it. Has BSF led you to a deeper acceptance of the teachings of the Catholic Church or not?”
Yes, with immeasurable zeal for the Mass, the Holy Eucharist, the Sacraments, for God’s house!

mdcpensive1 says: “BSF can be good for some but not fulfilling. This is like the Old Covenant that only pointed to the realities that were to come that was Jesus Christ in the New Covenant. It was good but not the best.”

Let me ask you this: Have you ever sat at a death vigil for your son after a logging accident? Have you ever witnessed a grandchild dying of cancer and wondered, why Almighty God, so young? Have you ever watched a young family become destitute because the husband chose cocaine over them? How about a father who abandoned his family simply because he had to “find” himself? Have you ever had someone ask you to pray for a son who will do prison time for a drunken driving homicide? Have you ever had a family member be abused by the one we trust the most, our priest?

These are the prayers of many of my friends who attend Mass, receive the Eucharist and Sacraments, and are “good” Catholics. But they are receiving unbelievable strength from Scripture as well and call their lives blessed. Please don’t say BSF is unfulfilling until you have been tested in God’s fire as we have been. If the Mass and Sacraments were all we needed in this life, we’d all be saints.

A good study of the Catechism - maybe “Why Catholic?” would be a place to being to understand the Faith.

We are required to study Scripture - through the light of the Church.

And Mass and the Sacraments are all we need in life, they are what makes us Saints.

I am glad you know of these Bible studies and hope you go. BSF is not junk but if you think it is for you great. I have never had an experience like BSF. My daughter-in- law and I went together and it brought us closer together. God Bless you on youe journey with Christ.

Oh and kager idid not dodge your question if BSF brought me closer to the CC. My answer is yes that is why I am here!!! And I am greatful.
