Bible Study HELP

I have what I hope is a good problem…

I’m reading one of the Ignatius Bibke studies and similar to other bible studies/commentaries I’m confused as to how best to read them. Do I read a verse followed by the commentary or do I read a chapter than go back and read the commentary or do I read a sentence and then commentary:shrug:

What’s the most logical way to use bible studies and commentaries?

Hi,

Here is what I do.

I first read the entire book with no commentaries.
I then will read a chapter or if it is long than a few paragraphs. I then will read the commentary.

If I stop and come back later to it, I will reread the chapter or two before to help me put it back into the proper context.

I find if I do it sentence by sentence I lose all continuity and context with the other verses. Other people may be different though.

I love those Ignatius Study guides among others 👍

I use these for lectio divina. I do what previous poster suggests. Read the entire book first, without any notes or commentary, in one sitting if possible or over no more than a week. Then I read a chapter at a time, section by section (a section has a black boldface title) and read the notes for that section, then read the section again. When I have finished a chapter, I read the whole chapter again. Then I look up cross references which are listed in the notes, and look up in other sources for things that might need more clarification.

this is preparation for lectio and takes a week or so. then I read the book, section by section, much more slowly, without the notes, in the meditative, prayerful style. This reading for lection takes about a week for a chapter, a month or two for a whole book (doing it every day for about 25-40 minutes).
 
I have the Navarre Bibles and get the Magnificat and what I do is read the Mass readings of the day and then go and read the commentary on those readings in the Navarre Bible. God Bless. 🙂

read parts when yo feel,
you can ask the Holy Spirit for help
you can ask the Holy spirit to give you what He wants you to read and why
some pick up the book or bible and ask Jesus to give them a page.

I myself would rather pray then allow the spirit of God to guide me, being open to His wishes in guiding me and also open to His allowing others to guide me.
You can’t go wrong there when the Holy Spirit is in command because He wont go past the Bible truth. He also gives us discernment.

I think you dont need to read a whole book first, unless you want. If you dont want to break the flow of the Gospel or epistle, you could try reading a chapter at a time, then referring to the notes. I currently have a JB which I havent used lately, but I personally didnt mind stopping to read each footnote. But it does help if you are familiar a it already with the book you are reading.
 
With the Gospels I am familiar enough with them that I read the notes for a Chapter and then read the Chapter, occasionally going back to a note if I have a question. With the Leters, I am not so familiar so I read the whole letter first, than read all the notes and then reread the letter Chapter by Chapter. I do really like the Ignatius study Bible, but it has the requirement that one have at least one other complete Bible on hand to look up cross references and such…
