Bible Study ideas and suggestions request

Hello CAF peoples. I am a student and for the last semester I have been leading a Catholic Bible Study at a public university Newman Center. So far we have just been going page by page through the Gospel of Matthew.

The group has asked me if for the next semester I could shift the study to a topical study rather than just continuing through Matthew. I think they just need a little change.

Anyway, I am happy to do this but a topical study will require quite a bit more work from me as the leader. I thought that I would post a request here on the CA forums for ideas, suggestions, and resources. I am fairly strong in the faith and am able to defend and teach the faith, so I don’t so much need apologetic resources, but coming up with topics, themes, or whatever resources for the bible study that could make my job easier would be great.

I think that since Lent is starting soon then probably I will do some “Lenten themed” topics during lent. That could be a good way for them to prepare for Holy Week too.

As Lent is fast approaching, why not something on the subjects of Penance and Reconciliation?

As a starting place you could find all the references to 40 days/years of penance - Jesus in the desert, the Ninevites who were warned by Jonah, Moses for 40 years in the desert, and I know there are more, as well. (Maybe start with a word study on the number 40, and see how many times it is referring to times of fasting and penance.)

That’s funny - I went from topical to individual books! I found them equally tough - for different reasons.Lent would be a great time to start- I once did “the passions of the Christ”. Comparing the accounts from the different gospels and seeing what each had to say,scripturally,spiritually,theologically even historically. it was great and I learned a lot too! God bless you and your class! Check out Donald Senior’s books on the Passion accounts- very helpful.👍

I have compiled some links to free online Bible Study Resources that might help you. Fidelis’ site is among them.

I might also suggest that you consider a study of the Sunday Mass Readings. In general the 1st Reading and the Gospel tend to have the same theme. The 2nd Reading occasionally does as well but not always.

It would get you all over the Bible rather than one book at a time. I think it is important for Catholics (and anyones else really) to do this. It will get you comfortable with your Bible fairly quickly.

It would also be topical as well and you don’t have to worry about coming up with the topics.
