My husband and a few other Catholic men want to meet about twice a month for a Bible study. They will have to do this on their own, as the priest made it clear that he wouldn’t lead it unless the group was larger.

Can anyone recommend a good orthodox Bible study that doesn’t require an experienced leader? They’d prefer something “hands on” rather than online, and are open to any suggestions.

My Bible study group uses **“Serendipity New Testament for Groups” **Bible - New International version.

This New Testament has many leading questions on each page to help discussions.

We also purchased the book of "Faith Sharing for Small Church Communities: to assist our discussion. This book contains questions and commentaries on the Sunday Readings.
ISBN: 0-86716-166-3, St. Anthony Messenger Press, $9.95

God bless!

I know of tons:

Emmaus Road books features Bible studies for both men and women’s groups:
emmausroad.org/All-Bible-Studies-C540.aspx

The Ignatius Study Bibles, with questions for study at the back of each book (currently the four Gospels and most of Paul’s epistles)
ignatius.com/ViewProduct.aspx?SID=1&Product_ID=824&Category_ID=6&TabID=1

Catholic Exchange has very in depth studies, including Genesis, Exodus, John, Romans, Galatians and James. Others available:
catholicexchange.com/css/biblestudy.asp?study=BS13

Scott Hahn also features Bible studies at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels on his web page:
salvationhistory.com/

Steve Ray’s monumental but user-friendly Catholic Bible study of John’s Gospel:
ignatius.com/ViewProduct.aspx?SID=1&Product_ID=418&SKU=BSGC:JN-P&ReturnURL=search.aspx%3f%3fSID%3d1%26Keywords%3djohn

Consider watching as a group one of Steve Ray’s Footprints of God videos, currently Jesus, Mary, Peter, Moses, Paul, and David and Solomon. They are extremely well done and come with great study notes:

Also consider watching Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ as a group and using these small group materials:
passion.catholicexchange.com/

Beginning Apologetics with Study Guide/questions available:
catholicapologetics.com/ba1.htm

If you want to study the Catholic response to the “Left Behind” end times errors, Paul Thigpen has a great book and study guide suitable for small groups:
search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?endeca=1&isbn=0965922820&itm=10

There are a couple of good books that refute the ridiculous but popular Da Vinci Code. Amy Welborn’s De-Coding Da Vinci is short and simple and includes questions for group and individual study at the end of each chapter: amywelborn.com/davincicode.html
Carl Olsen and Susan Meisel’s The Da Vinci Hoax is much more in depth and also has a study guide available: ignatius.com/books/davincihoax/resources/

Sheet from Coming Home Network that leads you through the Bible AND Catechism in a year:
chnetwork.org/readguide04.pdf

That should get you started! 🙂 I have many other suggestions at my website linked below.

I purchase Ignatius Catholic Study Bible. It comes with each book per author’s Gospel.

It has explanations and study questions.

The study questions have two parts: for understanding the chapter you are reading, and for real life application.

I’ve ordered them online from this website:
catholiccompany.com/product_detail.cfm?ID=5165

You can either buy the whole set or you can buy each book.

Serendipity also has the NAB! And thankfully–it’s without the at times heretical footnotes!!!

I’ve heard that you have to be verrrrry careful of material put out by the St Anthony Messenger Press.😦

I think such sweeping remarks are uncalled for and is **UNFAIR **to any Publisher

Please support your statement with source/writeups/quotations etc, such that the Publisher themselves may be referred to, if necessary for their comment/response… otherwise it is mere gossip and "uncalled for rumours?.

Sorry to be BLUNT; but let CA Forum on Sacred Scriptures be a Platform for discussion and clarification of Doctrines and Scriptural Truths and Church’s tachings.

I have really good bible studys from a man who had covered
  1. How to read the bible ( 8 or 9 talks on mp3)
  2. The Gospel of Luke (~50 talks on mp3)
  3. Reveltions (in progress, about 40 talks so far)
Just PM me and I can get your address and send them.

I know there are lots of Bible studies out there.
First, know what you want (Strictly Roman Catholic Bible study or Non-Denomitional.
  • then the depth of the study etc.
  • Beware also of lots of wolves in sheeps clothing offering Bible studies out in the marketplace.
  • If you group is all new, it will be a good idea to start with “Salvation History” - Available at EWTN Religious Catalogue (Adventure Bible series - Jeff Cavins & Scott Hahn) or Understanding the Bible - by Dr Scott Hahn even before searching into “Book-by-Book” indepth study.
Another good idea which I suggest is
to purchase the Catechism of the Catholic Church (with ithe Index of citation to Scripture verses)
Study the CCC (and refer to Scripture verse/section in the Bible… will give you Excellent Catholic understanding of the Scriptures & Church teachings.;;; and as Roman Catholic, you cannot go wrong with this approach.

God Bless

“The Great Adventure…A Journey Through the Bible”👍 👍 by Jeff Cavins

My parish has been doing this bible study for a month now and it is FANTASTIC:thumbsup:

Its a wonderful walk through the bible in a way perfect for some of us without a PhD in bible study:rolleyes:

The information we learn just drops our jaws plus he presents the bible in a way that sometimes just leaves us rolling:rotfl:

It is easy to follow and easy to understand.😉
