I forgot, but which college is that? I went to a small baptist college that was not very friendly to Catholics (at least not a great deal of the faculty that taught religion classes), and it infuriated me. I spent a lot of time trying to rebutt their comments that it gave me a headache. What in the world are we to do about things like that?
Samford. It was called Howard for a long time, until the 1950s. Anyway, the faculty seems pretty fair in the Divinity School.

One of my professors went there, but I guess that fairness didn’t rub off on him, I guess. At least, I hope, it is rubbing off on some folks.

He may not have gotten it from there, or it may have been another group of faculty than the ones today. More than one of the folks there now are not baptist.

In Birmingham, Alabama, the only major college/university with Bible studies is a Baptist one. Not all of the staff there is Baptist, and many non-Baptists take Scripture studies, OT and NT, and other related classes. I have not known of any of them changing faiths because of that.
Yes, but Protestants don’t proselytize other Protestants like they do Catholics. They don’t see the Catholic Church as just another denomination, but false church that Catholics need to be ‘saved’ from.

Not all of us do. That there are some protestants on here who do not do that ought to prove that.

I partially agree. Those Protestants that actively hunt Catholics seem to work from a script. They have not taken the time to write out scripts for other groups. Some of the anti-Catholic stuff would apply to some non-Catholics, if they knew to do so.

However, they will actively chase other denominations, but since they are flying blind, so to speak, they tend not to argue the theology but the social activities that they offer.

I went to my churches Bible study last week like I always do, and my church has members which are not friendly to Catholic doctine. (Wesleyan Church) A member of the study asked a question about praying to saints and Mary and it started a Catholic bashing session. I agree with the Catholic church and her teachings. Why I am not Catholic is a long story, but suffice it to say I was boiling inside and my wife even commented to the other members how upset I was getting but it made no difference. The pastor was even calling the tradition of praying to the saints “silly” and it is not a true doctrine. It greatly saddens me to see such things happen. I will NEVER go back to the Bible study, even though I am a member of the church. I went to my RCIA class two days later and it was so refreshing to hear the Father say that all Christian viewpoints will be respected and nobody will be called on the carpet because they are not Catholic. I just had to vent because it was greatly upsetting. How refreshing to go to RCIA and have thoughful, respectful conversations!
I just started R.C.I.A. yesterday and am soooo excited to finally be with others journeying along as I am! It is such a blessing and I look forward to each class to come!

Feel free to drop me a PM and let me know how your classes are going!

God bless you!!!

Patrick, I know someone who is Seventh-Day Adventist who won’t hear anything about the Catholic church…how do you break them?

Whether or not outside bible study is ‘heretical’ or not is not the topic of discussion.

Please get back on track. Thanks!

God bless-

churchcamefirst,

Please don’t “break” anyone;)

I was a Seventh day Adventist, who having ears would not hear. And in my opinion, looking back now, it could have cost me my eternal life with God.

In my opinion there is notihng you can do to have them hear anything about the Catholic Church…except pray daily for them…it is God’s work. As a former SDA, and in the mindset of most fundamentalist protestants, we always were “working” to “win”, “save” “souls”…especially those who were deceived by Satan and members of The Catholic Church. As I matured and go through the conversion process to God’s True Church and His One True Fold, I have come to understand that it is God’s work to save souls. Of course we have a major part to play, which is to pray that we are filled with God’s Spirit and Grace, and that our lives reflect the Fruit of the Spirit; to be available for those who have questions, and respond in honesty and love; and most importantly pray, pray, pray, for God to bless other’s according to His Will…He knows what we all need better than we do.

After I began to make known my desire to join The Church, I found out from a friend of ours (a nice Catholic lady) that she had been praying for me for the past 8 years. I admired her life and her family since I’ve known them. During those 8 years there was nothing she could have said or done to “break” me. I wouldn’t have “heard” or accepted it. But in those moments of God’s grace that He continues to provide us, I heard Him.

Many times, prayer without ceasing, and the silent witness of a consistenty sincere Christian life has greater impact than the most glorious oration.

And it is all still a mystery and miracle to me…I don’t fully understand how it all happened…I’m just so thankful to be where I am today!!!

God bless all!!!

Perhaps I shouldn’t of used the word ‘break’, but I he won’t listen to anything Catholic. Just tells me the pope is the anti-Christ and I just look at him with such sorrow :bighanky: but I will pray for hm and hope that the Holy Spirit will guide him just as he guided you. Welcome home. 🙂

What a great opportunity! I wouldn’t quit that bible study even if you paid me! I love to debate. The Catholic faith can stand on its own - even when played on Protestant terms (ie Sola Scriptura). I’d be respectful and be praying heavily…
I’ll second Phil here. What a great opportunity for evangelization. Speak the truths of the Catholic faith, and explain the misconceptions - do it in charity and love and the anti-Catholic “bashing” will be seen for what it is by those who are acting in good faith.

Peace,
-Robert

He may hear more than you think, but having been there myself, and deeply and sincerely believing SDA teachings…well…I won’t say it is impossible to hear. I was so encouraged to find other SDAs who joined God’s One True Fold.

The “anti-Catholic” sentiments and beliefs I held were based on erroneous information I believed about Catholics…as is the case with most who “hate” Catholicsim. In my “hatred”, especially of what I perceived the Eucharist to be about, God gave me the grace to at least try to understand what Catholics teach and believe about the Eucharist. I found out I was wrong, came to deeply believe the Church’s teaching regarding the Eucharist, and was placed in a spiritual turmoil that is impossible to describe. I believed the Eucharist, and also many of my SDA beliefs. I prayed and prayed and prayed, and God blessed me. It took a while but all the other issues work themselves out as our faith increases. But I never would have believed a Catholic just sitting down and talking with them. Perhaps some do…I didn’t. God works in many many ways to reach His own.

I cannot stress how important and necessary I believe it is for daily prayer. God is good and His mercy endures forever!!! Unfortunately we are only give a limited amount of time on this earth to discover that. And I know we will if we pray pray pray!!!

God bless all!!!

Here are some verses I put together that might help:

I’ll concede from the start that this case is not explicit in scripture. However, I think the implicit case is compelling. I’ll attempt to make four main points:
  1. Those who have died in God’s good grace are alive and that these people are aware of what is happening on earth.
  2. Those in heaven are concerned about what happens on earth.
  3. That our prayers can be carried by intercessors to God.
  4. That the prayers of the righteous are worth pursuing.
1)Those who have died in God’s good grace are alive and that these people aware of what is happening on earth.

Mark 12

Long after Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob had died, God said to Moses,‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ 27 So he is the God of the living, not the dead. You have made a serious error.”

In Heb 11, the achievements of the Old Testament saints are reviewed with an emphasis on their faith. It ends by stating that they had not yet received salvation:

39These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised. 40God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect.

Heb 12 starts like this:

1Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

I believe this makes the case that those who have died physically are still alive and that they are witnesses to what occurs on earth.
  1. Those in heaven are concerned about what happens on earth.
Luke 15

7I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.
  1. That our prayers can be carried by intercessors to God.
Rev. 8

3Another angel, who had a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense to offer, with the prayers of all the saints, on the golden altar before the throne. 4The smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of the saints, went up before God from the angel’s hand.
  1. That the prayers of the righteous are worth pursuing.
James 5

The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.

To summarize, Catholics, as well as several other faiths, believe that once we are alive in Christ we remain alive in Christ. We also believe that those in heaven are aware and concerned about those still on earth. For this reason, we seek their intercessions given that they have been deemed righteous, if, in fact, they are in
God’s good grace when they die.

Tha is not good enough, show me where and the exact words because I doubt it. Father Corapi knows the way to heaven is to be in the church that Jesus founded, otherwise he wouldn’t of ‘converted’ and became a Catholic priest.
Can you cite the Scripture that involves Fr. Corapi being the judge of who gets in and who doesn’t?

Father Corapi does not “judge”. Only God “judges”. Father Corapi is a very religious man who is aware and learned of God’s Word. He knows the way… afterall, its in the Bible isn’t it? 🙂
