I just started taking an online course from the Saint Paul Center for Biblical Theology. This organization was started by Scott Hahn. Is anyone familiar with their materials? How do they rank against some of the other (preferably free) materials out there for Catholic bible study? I’ve always been a bit timid when it comes to just picking the Bible up and reading, due to our duty as Catholics to understand Scripture in the light of Catholic tradition; I didn’t want to make any errors in my interpretation or “miss” out on some of the important themes. The focus right away in the lessons on covenants already has me feeling like I’m on the right track. Let me know what y’all think .

These are good entry level courses.

The material you find on Scott Hahn’s website is good solid stuff, and I commend you for making the effort to get into God’s Word. Dr. Hahn has been a blessing to the Church if for no other reason that he has a lot of Catholics finally picking up and reading that most Catholic of books, the Bible.

I would also encourage you, as you put to good use this material, to use it as a springboard to investigate other good, orthodox Catholic Bible study material. Dr. Hahn would tell you himself that to be a good, well-rounded Catholic reader of the Bible, you should get a number of perspectives – as long as they are helpful to you and are faithful to the teachings of the Church, who is the authoritative interpreter of Scripture. There is so much great stuff out there these days, there is no excuse for Catholics to be “Bible illiterate.”
