Bible to use for personal study / public apologetics?

I am looking to purchase a “good” bible to use for personal study, and to have as a handy resource for apologetics when explaining the faith.

I am looking for a valid, Church approved translation that is good for reading and understanding, and is published in a way that leaves some room in the margins for short personal notes, and personally written directions to related verses. I would want something sturdy (I plan to keep for years to come), and easy to carry with (when I leave the confines of my own home/desk).

Does anyone have any recommendations for me?

The New American Bible is the official translation for the U.S. It has the specific, direct, written endorsement of Pope Paul VI. I’ve used the NAB St. Joseph ed. for years.

It is en vogue to bash the NAB on these forums. Some will say that Duoay Rheims is the most beautiful for prose, while others cling to the Jerusalem Bible. Or the Haydock Bible or Knox because they are the “only” orthodox translations in modern language. Of late, the RSV-CE is hip, especially Scott Hahn’s Ignatius NT, because it is supposedly the one version true to orthodoxy. Arrgghhh!!!

All in all, if the NAB is good enough for the Pope, then it is good enough for me. Let the criticism begin!
 
I would recommend something in the RSV family. They are more literal translations and because they came from Protestantism originally, will be more familiar when defending the Church from their attacks.

RSV-CE has some archaic English forms, but only when someone isspeaking to God.
RSV-CE 2nd Ed eliminated the archaic forms except in a ew specific laces like the Our Father.
NRSV-CE has no archaic forms that I know of, but is translated using inclusive language.

All are church approved.
 
The Ignatius Study Bible sounds like the best in your case, though its not in one single volume yet, but the whole NT is and it’s very affordable. Most importantly its an awesome resource.
