Agnes,

Your mom’s friend might be more comfortable with the New Living Translation Catholic Edition. You can find it on Amazon. Very inexpensive and without study notes. I like it myself!

NRSV lieteral translation fo the six languages of the Bible
Douay Rheims- 20th c edition
Bible de Saint Jerusalem (Bible of Jerusalem)- more poetic

I would not recommend any paraphrase version to someone new to Christianity for a couple reasons. The first, is that I find that paraphrases often garble the message being conveyed in the text, not make it clearer. The second, is that I would not want to teach a new believer to rely on paraphrases, which are typically developed by a single editor/translator and heavily influenced by their particular theological bent. It also will make it very difficult for them to keep up with liturgy or Bible studies that use standard bible versions. I think they can be useful for Bible studies, but typically for someone who is more familiar with the text than a new convert would be. Just my opinion.

The Revised Standard Version (which is a common Bible between Protestants, Catholics and Orthodox) would be the best Bible to buy (in my opinion).

Make sure to purchase a “Catholic Edition” so it has all the books of the Bible.

The abbreviation of this bible is: RSV-CE.

There is also a NRSV-CE, but I prefer the RSV-CE

There is also the RSV-2CE which is also very good. The is the “Revised Standard Version, 2nd Catholic Edition” - also called the Ignatius Bible.

So I would personally recommend either the RSV-CE or the RSV-2CE

God Bless

I would advise you to call your local Catholic Shop and ask them if they carry TGA Bible. Go look at it. Check youtube for reviews.

As I spent my book allowance for this year all on one book, I cannot buy one until next year.

Is this in modern English and is it a Study Bible?
The RSV-2CE was updated in 21st century, so it’s very modern AND orthodox.

The RSV-CE is from the mid 20th century and pretty good too.

Neither of them are older English.

The RSV-CE is from the mid 20th century and dry orthodox.

Both translations are used for Mass in some parts of the world (not the USA)

Neither of them are older English.

But they aren’t Study Bibles? Can you recommend something similar that’s a Study Bible?

Well… there are two major study Bibles based on those two translations.
  1. The Navarre Bible uses the RSV-CE translation
  2. The Ignatius Study Bible uses the RSV-2CE translation
