I don’t think the Church has anything like a line by line “interpretation” of Bible verses. Christ repeatedly speaks in parables. He often uses extremes as a way to get his point across. I really don’t think that Christ is suggesting we practice self mutilation. He is saying we should jettison anything in our lives that may stand between us and God. The most basic way to define sin is anything that seperates us from God.

Although we are not to mutilate our human bodies (and doing so would NOT make one a saint!), we are to take Hell/Gehenna seriously, and remove all aspects from our life that would be an “occasion of sin.”

Our limbs do not cause us to sin; limbs are innocent bodyparts with no will apart from the head. But there are aspects of our life that do lead to sin, and should be dropped lest we incur Purgatory, or worse. Lent is a good time of year to do so.

I agree, we are not to mutilate our bodies, but I think Christ was illustrating very strongly that NO sacrifice is too great to avoid hell, even if the sacrifice is great

It is ONLY a metaphore! A Moral teaching that has at its core the logical lesson that one can avoid sin by avoiding the “near occassion of sin.”
