Just a quick thanks to all those who have taken time to be in discussion with me… it’s much appreciated.

Can someone tell me… is there a specific Bible version I should be using? I have a King James… is that cool?

BluegrassJimmie,

Different people will have different tastes in these things. Personally, I like the RSV-CE (Revised Standard Version–Catholic Edition) and have heard many apologists recommend it as well. It’s sometimes called the “Ignatius Bible”. I have heard that the “NRSV” (New Revised Standard Version) is NOT good, as it’s been made more politically correct with inclusive language.

If you are a Catholic then I would recommend one approved by the Catholic Church of which the King James is not. The King James does not have all of the books of the Bible it it. It is missing the Deuterocanonical books which Protestants do not except. The bible that I recommend the most is a Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition or RSV-CE.

Deuteroncanonical… is that like Maccabees and such?

Yep: 1 and 2 Maccabees, Sirach, Wisdom, Baruch, Tobit, and Judith, and parts of two others, Daniel and Esther. Luther took them out, and wanted to toss out some NT books such as the epistle of James, but a friend concinced him not to. It’s interesting to note that the first English Reformation Bibles did not have the seven books taken out.

Hey, KJV is cool if you’re a believer in the Church of England, or better yet, a member. KJ was an Anglican believer. So, if the Anglican church is the true church, then the KJV must be the true version.
I really don’t know about an anti-Church of England person embracing a Church-of_England bible version.

The Authorised Version (as it is more accurately, if oddly, known), has, despite its origins in the Church of England, commended itself to others than Anglicans.

KJV-only Baptists are not Anglicans - any more than the Congregationalists or Presbyterians who have embraced it 🙂

BTW - the Anglican Church has not been in the habit of regarding itself as the TR. ##

Which of course makes it all the more illogical…embrace the translation of a false sect to which you thererfore refuse to join, but take their “bible” as inerrant and inspired by God Himself!
ps. I don’t know what a TR is.

There’s nothing wrong with the KJV. It’s got a few errors, but no more than any other translation, Catholic or not.

Of course if you are talking about KJ Onlyists then its a good point, because they don’t believe in a lot of the Anglican teachings.

And except for missing 7 books and two more parts of other books…

Absolutely right lol… of course as we know the original KJV had these anyways!

I’m not a particularly big fan of the KJV, other than for two reasons:
  1. it’s good to use when talking to Protestants
  2. it just sounds so cool lol

I could have sworn I read somewhere that the reason why the NIV came about is because in the '60’s Protestants took a look at the KJV and noted over 30,000 mistakes. I tried to look it up & of course, now I cannot find it.

Oh the KJV does have plenty of errors, and in fact I wouldn’t recommend it because is some ways it is a terrible translation. For someone who just wants to read the Bible though, if they like the KJV, there’s not really any reason that I’d say its a bad idea.

Oh. Okay. Yeah, I had to read that version in an Elizabethan/Shakespearian English class…a few English classes, actually, outside of the Shakespeare one, because of the poeticness of it.

Douay-Rheims for language, although I do have a soft spot for the majesty of the original KJV. I have a bunch of Bibles, including the Tanakh, or Jewish Bible

I also have the Vulgate and a Greek NT. I always recommend the Greek if you have some time to learn the language. It’s beautiful, and something about reading the original words of the Bible touches me.

Right now, I have on the program:

Very impressive website, however some bibles are “conspicuous by their absence” in the same way that Good Conduct medals are conspicuous if missing from a military man’s shirt.

These missing bibles are (all Catholic - lol):
The New American Bible (which is very different from the New American Standard Bible)
The Jerusalem Bible
The New Jerusalem Bible
The Revised Standard Version
The Revised Standard Version - Catholic Edition
The Good News Bible - Catholic Edition

Missing from the Commentaries are (Catholic again - imagine that!):
The Dictionary of the Bible
The New Jerome Biblical Commentary
